The historic Victoria Park Market in downtown Auckland is currently undergoing a $20 million renovation. By completion in mid 2012 80 new shops, boutiques, restaurants and cafes will be revealed at the new look Victoria Park Market. The upgrade includes a restaurant and nightclub zone off Drake St and a retail precinct at the Victoria St level. Restaurants will include Mexican eatery the Flying Burrito Brothers, an Argentinian steak house, a New York-style tapas bar and a Japanese restaurant. A German brewery is apparently interested in the Market, as well as designers from Perth, Melbourne and Sydney. All the restaurants and bars will have outdoor areas. Auckland radio station Big FM is to take up residence in a space with a stage for live performances. The heritage walk of famous New Zealanders will be resurrected, and it will also feature a small museum. I love the rooftop outdoor dining areas with views across Victoria Park.

+1 Spoke to some shop owners fitting out their shops today and they seem to be pretty excited. The Indian restaurant is going to be huge and the good news is that they are allowed to have outdoor seating on Victoria Street West which will become an extension of the CBD  Mozaik coffee is apparently opening on the corner of Union and Victoria Street West.

Auckland Icon Returns to it's Former Glory

The exciting re-development of Victoria Park Market is Auckland’s CBD is now drawing to an end. With 85% of the revitalised shops now let to a cross section of food, hospitality, and retail tenants. The market is set to capitalise on the continued rejuvenation of the area which has seen Telecom relocate its whole operation 100 metres up to Victoria Street. Mainzeal, Vodafone, KPMG have all relocated nearby, bringing around 8,000 new lunchtime shoppers to the area. The market is now partially open with the $20million development scheduled to complete in November this year, in time for Christmas. The restaurants now open include LaZeppa, a favourite inner-City bar. The Oakroom, which is an upmarket New York style eatery. Atico Cocina, which is Carribean and South American inspired cuisine. And the latest to open is Libertine, this new bar and eatery will take its cue loosely from New Orleans with a fusion of Creole, French, Latin, Cajun and South American cuisines. The retail now open includes Platinum (Nike and other sports distributors), Casa Gelato, jewellery shops, parallel imported perfume and sunglasses, and a men’s barber. Soon to open is Brioche Café, Indian Village restaurant, Artisan deli, Mix Makeup, Skin Care, Mozaik Café, a convenience store and lotto, professional nail bar, designer women’s fashion and many more. The developers have sold down on Freehold Unit Titles 50% of the shops and restaurants to investors and owner occupiers ($26million in value) on a cross section of net leases from 6-12 years. The balance of the market shops are currently for Sale with yields available from 5.5% - 7% and shops sizes 20m² - 400m².

Entertainment:

A large screen is being installed, with new landscaping, outdoor furniture, ambient lighting and an entertainment stage in the central courtyard. Themed weeks, festivals, special events such as Christmas and New Year, and important days such as Valentines Day and Easter are all opportunities for Victoria Park Market to make shopping and dining an even better experience for visitors. The entertainment will be vibrant, showcasing quality talent and a variety of musical styles. Top acts, top entertainment, and a sheltered environment to enjoy music over a coffee or to chill a while after some serious dining or shopping.
