This is what I found in today's amNY on page 6.
they had a free meeting today from 6 to 8 at the Marriot Marquis. well too late I guess :D
I don't know if it's been talked about here, but here it is anyway:

vision42 is a citizens' initiative to re-imagine and upgrade surface transit in Midtown Manhattan, with a low-floor light rail line running river-to-river along 42nd Street within a landscaped pedestrian boulevard. It is sponsored by the Institute for Rational Urban Mobility, a New York-based not-for-profit corporation.

That seems like a really cool idea.

I'm a little confused as to where its going. Is it replacing 42nd street? Or is it following a pedistrian walk away, and 42nd remains untouched?

over 42nd street, the plan wants to get cars out of the way.
which might create even more problems for traffic, but NYC really needs some kind of tunnel in the area to quickly get cars from the East Side to the West Side without having to go through the streets.
and the article said that it was meant to give a more hospitable area for pedestrians, more trees taking over the asphalt, and possibly outdoor cafés. I'm no fan of the outdoor tables on the streets taking over my streetwalk, but I am totally for this type of environment where there will be way enough space for everybody

It would never work. You still have all the traffic from the avenues EVERY block trying to get up/downtown, so it wouldn't be that pedestrian friendly.

I agree on the tunnel though. It takes 45 min to get from the E 49 to the Lincoln tunnel during pm rush. I've been stuck a few times going from my aunts to NJ

I don't like it, looks like an expensive way to make things worse in terms of traffic!
