Adelphi Hotel (now Parmelia House)



Federal Hotel (I assume it is now a generic tower in between Barracks and Peir on Wellington Street?)

King Edward Hotel, I am pretty sure this is now a Pier Street Carpark or the Aarons Hotel that is opposite.

Looking at all these old theatres and cinemas around Perth makes it look like a mini broadway. Even when we were more of a country town we were more of a city! **** me it sucks. Its like the 70s/80s just sucked the life out and made us a soulless city. How the **** did this happen?? Seriously, how?

I still think the 90s were better than recent times, better than now even although we are at least working on it now.

Great summary of our nightlife history - proves we've always been up for a party.

**** it just hurts when you read statements like this:

"sold his Capitol Theatre to the City of Perth to make way for a car park"

Makes me physically ill, just like house prices!

See I don't agree with that argument, as there has always been plenty of space in Perth. The only reason many heritage buildings are gone in Perth is they were demolished for a quick buck by their owners. Either trying to save money by not buying new land for a new building; or by an owner selling out because it was more profitable to sell/demolish then it was maintaining or retaining the building.

To me selling/demolishing classic heritage for a large tower is no different then doing it for something like Megamart. It always came down to money at the end of the day. If Perth had protectionist heritage laws back in1960-1990, the large towers would have still been built, they just would have been placed on less valued sites.

It's also somewhat inspiring, in that as the city becomes rejuvenated by the current boom and increased resi, the (few) buildings that remain could be refurbished and become well-used once again.

I'm thinking of all those beautiful old buildings that line the Hay St Mall - they could be refurbed to cool bars, offices or resi (or a mix of all three). The Palace hotel could easily become a hotel again. Plaza cinema could reopen. Treasury bulidngs could get a sympathetic refurb and reopening. WA Club could become a boutique hotel and function centre. Newspaper House, Perth Tech School etc are being redone as part of the BHP buiding. His Majesty's Theatre could get better use. Govt House Ballroom could host regular small concerts/dances. Post Office building is already being opened up to the public.

I think it is sad that some of those old hotels I mentioned were demolished as recently as 1990!

I agree in part with repi, His Majesty's could definitely be put to better use. I miss the old Greenwood bar that used to operate out of there as recently a decade ago. I would love a more appropriate awing to be built for it.

I think the old Theatre Royal is a travesty, the building is just a shell of it's former self. I would love for a total restoration of it's 3 story facade.

The Savoy Hotel is a wasted opportunity. While it could be turned into yuppy apartments. I think we have enough of those already in Perth. It could also be returned to public access with multiple small bars, restaurants etc contained within the one building.

The WA Club, Newsapaper House and Perth Tech School have lots of potential. Lets just hope the ground floor doesn't just become retail while the upper floors remain empty, like what has happened to many of the historical buildings on the malls.

The Arthouse Hotel in Sydney is a good example of a historical CBD building turned into a public entertainment facility. It is a multistory, former School of Arts Building, dating back to 1836. Now it contains 3 bars and a restaurant and is very popular with both the weekday suits and weekend clubbers. If something like that was done it Perth say to The Palace, it would certainly add a bit more variety to the city.

I completely support the laws on heritage buildings that have a grand element to them. Imagine the Perth we would have today with all these gems. Instead we have some 80s concrete and glass jungle with no soul.

I say put verandah's back on the heritage buildings that used to have them, modelling on the old photos.

Wow, we have lost some stunning, stunning buildings. So so sad. I mean this is the kind of stuff we love about London and other cities where much heritage as been retained. Shaftesbury Avenue is filled with glorious old theatres like the ones we've knocked down. I can't believe we lost some of those just for concrete car parks. So so sad.

The top one is the same hotel that I posted a colour picture of a few pages back. It was where the Wellington St freeway overpass is now.

The latter picture is taken is where the Kings Hotel is now. It was called the Paddington for a while before demolition.

Today pertnnow.com.au added an 'Old Perth' Gallery, and the picture they use to show it on the main page is the old foreshore one in this and the cap square thread.
They hace alot of the other photos that have been uploaded on here to. Actually just about all of them.
Coincidence or not?
