Walk Around Whitefish/Kalispell with Boris

Well, it's been a few months and I am again ready to post another 'Walk Around with Myself' thread! This time I am portraying the small cities/towns of Whitefish and Kalispell in Montana, where my family recently went on vacation over Easter break. Since we own some lakefront property down there, we stayed the whole week and I was able to get some good shots on Thursday.

I'm also going to do this differently than my 'Walk around Calgary' thread, since I am covering two areas and I took the shots at different times throughout the day (kinda back and forth).

Whitefish, Montana 5,489 (2002)

Okay, so we will start off with the lake and surrounding areas. You will notice that the lake is still frozen over. In the summer the small beaches around it are filled with people and there is a lot of boating. Our condo is in the group of buildings in the second picture. The Big Mountain ski resort is visible in the background of many pictures.

Lately the tourism has picked up a bit so the Lake Association has been putting a lot of money into beautifying the area. The roads are better paved, there are new lamp posts and retaining walls, the waterfront is being changed...

Pure indulgence friends...note the ******* rollercoaster...

Downtown Whitefish just after crossing the rail yards...not much of a skyline to speak of but there are a few gems here...

^ :)

NOTE: I love the look of the town from the ground. It is a cross between mountain town and western...makes me feel at home...

Driving down the streets a bit, I came across some more buildings I thought were worth noting. This is the first time I've seen the local church...

Kalispell, Montana 15,463 (2002)

Now my pics of the larger city start. There were some newer modern buildings present that I didn't bother taking pics of though, only areas of interest... (not much of a skyline here either, but still...)

Center street and 1st Avenue (not the main drag)

Main Street

Okay, now if any of you ever DO visit Kalispell, make sure you go to Moose's Saloon. This is probably the best beer/pizza place in all of Montana. Since it was too dark for my camera to take pictures inside I will just describe it for you. Think minimal light, wood tables and benches, names and such carved into every exposed inch of wood, all eating utensils, trays and plates are metal...and 15" pizzas! Anyways, I took some pics of the facade.

Looking out onto the street from the saloon...

And some final areas of interest in Kalispell. Including:

Kalispell Centre Mall (I love the way the color turned out in the photo)

The local Art Gallery

And a shot looking to the east at the Rockies (both Whitefish and Kalispell are on a sort of plateau...or something like that...between ranges I think. About a 6 hour drive south of Calgary, Alberta. It takes about 40 minutes to drive south from Whitefish to Kalispell at speed limit.)

And then some footnotes:
-Both Whitefish and Kalispell are healthy and growing (albight slowly). There has been some notable development in both, such as brand new communities and some beautification of the downtowns...
-This year is Whitefish's Centennial! (I think) Yay! :dance2:
EDIT: - Yes, that is ME in that picture...I'm a handsome devil...

What a great tour. Beautiful country over there. Your pictures came out great. I haven't seen a Chevy SS in ages. lol Great thread. Thanks.
Great pics. This place there looks very typical imo, but nature is great. The car in the 6th pic looks great.
I visited Kalispell!

Yes, I`ve been there in june,2001. Kalispell, a great place to remember. Big tasty roasted beef at d `Arbys, shown on the last picture. And the hotel bookings were not confirmed, but miss Faber (`Oh, do you have relatives in Europe?`) changed some roomnumbers and we got in..... we slept well that night. And the next day we drove to Spokane, what a difference does it make.... Someday I will return to beautiful Montana, I know for sure.
Nice Walk !
my ex has a house in whitefish...know the area well.
i bought my hiking boots and backpack in kalispell.

if you ever get a chance check out bozeman. i love montana.....glacier national park is tremendous.
I was in the area recently and my hotel was in that mall pictured above. Great pics! The Flathead Valley is awesome. Big Fork is pretty sweet too.
Kalispell? I never heard that town before and it's in Montana??? That poor bordertown for Canada? My impression to Kalispell= how Americans look at Tijuana or Mexicali--- poor, ugly, not fully developed, crimes... I'm sure it's look like our southwest, but even worse.
I know this thread has been posted for some time now, but I would like to make a belated post.

Boris550, I find your commentaries most engaging and refreshing. In fact, I appreciate them as much as (if not more than) the pictures themselves.

I hope you continue to post future ones in a similar vein.
tpe: Thanks! I do get lazy sometimes when posting pictures so this is probably one of the few times that I have had good commentary. On SSP I have almost no commentary at all. In fact all my newest Calgary pictures have been posted on SSP so I haven't updated my Walk Around Calgary thread in a little while.

xantarcx: Kalispell isn't all that bad you know. Far from being attractive or exciting, but that main drag has a little charm. I've been to Montana more times than I've been to BC (which is the only other province I've visited). My family goes down to Whitefish about twice a year. All of those trips include Kalispell at some point. In fact I am preparing a turkey for Thanksgiving dinner tonight while my parents are finishing up in Montana.

EDIT: Here is a map of Montana I found. You can see both Whitefish and Kalispell up in the NW corner.

I've also been to Butte and Helena.

Never visited either town, but these pics do bring back memories of a couple of drives thru Montana, a forgotten state imo. Beautiful scenery, and the saying of Big Sky country makes sense when you see it. Thanks.

You are a bit modest here. I think most of your tours have engaging commentaries.

I like this part of the forum because there are nice pictures, and almost everybody here has no particular axe to grind. But good commentary is a challenge. :)
Kalispell, is a city, that I always had curiosity of knowing, due to its location... Great, thanks

Actually it is a millionare's playground & Kalispell is right in the middle of everything. It is the next Aspen except better scenery, more land, & worse weather.

Montana a rural playground for dot-com royalty
