Waterloo's Population

Ok, a while back there was a dispute about the population of KW. This is a link to The Record's numbers for this year--497, 600. And keep in mind that's not even metro! It's just Waterloo Region, without Guelph and such.

It migh seem lame to post this, but now it can't be said that we don't have a half million people here.

So the Cambridge-Guelph-Kitchener-Waterloo region has a population of c. 625 000? That's impressive.
'That's impressive'

Have you seen their skyline?

Of course not. :)
Although Guelph actually isn't part of Kitchener-Waterloo's metro.
Large population, horrible skylines, though. They're more like smaller cities clustered together and giving other cities some unfair advantages. :) Even though K-W is now Canada's tenth largest city, we'll have to see if it is indeed WORTHY of being the tenth largest city.
Well, I wont try and defend our skyline but in most other respects KW is really on top.

Give us 20 years and we'll have a skyline. Waterloo is building like crazy, Kitchener is most definetely going to have some more condos and offices going up, and Cambridge...well they'll remain small.
Wasnt KW just rated as the 5 best place to live in Canada??
I believe Guelph will be its own CMA in the next census, right? Along with Barrie, and some other cities.
Waterloo has consistently ranked among the best places to live in the world by UN studies.
KW Metro may now be officially larger than London but will never be as important. My god, the place doesn't even have an airport.
As ANYONE what SW Ontario's most important city is and they will all say London with Windsor as a major second place even if KW is considered pat of SW Ontario.
In terms of the GoldenHorshoe no one would even debate that the leader is, far and away, Hamilton.
Thankfully according to CMA areas Guelph will have its own becuase it would be disheartening for it to be lumped together with Kitchener.
Geulph is such a beautiful, liberal little city while Kitchener is just, well, Kitchener and thats NOT a good thing.
^ um.... i think we have an International Airport, dont we??? ;)

What planet do you hail from? Really.

1. Waterloo has an international airport. I've been there.
2. London more important than KW? Really?
3. Hamilton over every other part of the GTA? Even Toronto?

I think you need to take your pills.
London is obviously the capital of southwestern Ontario...both because of its size and central location. Kitchener is technically in southwestern Ontario but the whole Waterloo Region seems to be aligning more and more with the GTA.
Thunder Bay's International Airport is better. It's Ontario's Third busiest. :]

I'd say Guelph is part of KW metro. There are people that live in Guelph and communte to KW.

I thought we passed the 500,000 mark in March?

As for Guelph - Funny enough a friend drove me to Guelph today and I was suprised at how much growth occurred over the past ten years. While the journey time is still the same - the amount of countryside is now like 10-12 minutes and the rest fast food and car dealerships. Guelph is growing just a crazy as Kitchener. I givem' 15-20 years but Kitchener will probably put the breaks on sprawl since its short land.

London Airport is busier than Waterloo Int'l but its peripheral nature helps. Same it true with London's gay scene. It has more bars cause its that much further from Toronto, not cause it has more gay people.

And someone said Guelph is liberal compared with Kitchener - I sure hope you talking political parties and not in cultural or social terms. In order to live in Guelph I'd have find Jesus, hetrosexuality, a mortgage, 2.5 kids and 3.6 cars and a Sobey's - and all in the same week. I'd never fit in there. Lovely town sure but not liberal enough for the likes of me. And if you are talking in cultural terms....Kitchener's Centre in the Square actually blows that QE Theatre dump in Vancouver straight out of the water. Oh, maybe there is hope for me in Guelph afterall.

How come London is more important than Windsor?
^ London is right in the centre of the region and is 1.5 times larger. London's zone of influence includes several different counties while Windsor's is pretty much restricted to Essex County. (A good way of roughly estimating this is to look at newspaper circulation).
Ok, this is getting lame. This is a Waterloo thread; if you want a London vs. Windsor pissing contest (which would be lame) make a new thread for it.

Huh? Guelph is without a doubt the most socially liberal city in Southwestern Ontario -- or for that matter one of the most socially liberal cities of any size in Canada.
