Weldiya, Wollo – A new and modern football stadium, with a capacity to hold 25,000 spectators, will be built here in the area known as “Mechare Meda”.

This was announced during the stadium’s ground breaking ceremony, which was attended by Gedu Andargachew, Vice-Chairman of ANDM and Dr. Arega Yirdaw, CEO of Midroc Ethiopia Technology Group.

The construction on the 331 million Birr stadium is expected to be completed in 5-year time.

Residents of Weldiya have so far raised 1 million Birr and government employees have pledged their 1 month salaries. Furthermore, three new fund raising committees have been established in Weldiya, Dessie, and Addis Ababa. - EthioSports
Another empty promise? (like the Gorgis stadium)

It's apparently the area where Al-Amoudi grew up (according to a comment on EthioSports)..

Don't worry, it will probably not be built lol.

Great find FKebede....so pleased to see the progress. It looks like the stadiums in Weldiya, Hawassa, and Bahir Dar are all on pace to be finished by either late this year or early next year...and we can finally stop dreaming and start planning to host the AFCON in 2019.

oh...and I forgot the one in Neqemt, Wollega which is also nearing completion (only installation of seats and laying of running tracks remaining). So, 4 international standard stadiums by next year.

Whats up with Mekelle stadium? If that is finished then it would be 5. I read somewhere a while back that the plan was for 7 plus the new AA stadium. I guess they might also count the rebuilt Abebe Bekilla stadium.

Construction of the Mekelle Stadium began years before all of these newer stadiums were even conceived of yet it is still a loooong way from being completed while those that began construction much later than Mekelle are almost finished now. As for additional stadiums, the A.A City Administration did announce last year that it would build 20-30,000 seat stadiums in each of the 10 Sub-cities. I can only find the link to a recent article that talks about the first 5 stadiums that will be built in 2015 but there will be a total of 10 new stadiums in the coming few years.

10 stadiums of 20,000-30,000? Who will play there? We'd be approaching 400,000 seats in total in the city. At a similar price we'd be talking 3 billion birr, almost $160 million. This strikes me as reaching the point of overkill. The Municipality should address more pressing issues, such as running water, paved and named streets, working transformers, sub-par schools, the lack of green space, and most importantly, street lights....

That in fact was good to the city of 4.000.000 people. It will incourage the youth of Addis Ababa to engage in sports activities and produce more capable sports men. The problem is it was announced a year or so ago to start building soon but so far there is no indication of building any of it. Sometimes it looks that they are using it for media consumption. here is the news

Designs for Five City Stadiums Complete
Addis Abeba City Administration Sport Commission received final designs for the five zonal stadiums to be built by 2015.

Ultimate Plan Plc, which won the contract four months ago, has designed two 30,000-seat capacity and three 25,000-seat capacity stadiums, for a total fee of 1.8 millionBr.

The Commission will pick contractors in a month’s time, according to Daniel Darge, deputy commissioner and head of sport promotion and development.

The City Administration has released 100 million Br to cover the construction costs for the current fiscal year.

The construction of the stadiums was decided during the discussion for the 2012/13 budget, Daniel said.

The stadiums will be in; Bole district, at CMC; Nefa Silk Lafto District, at Lafto; Gulele District, in Wereda 8, around Semen Hotel; Yeka District, at Ferensai Legasion; and Arada District, at Bell Air. The CMC and Lafto stadiums will have a seating capacity of 30,000, in an area of 113,000sqm, whilst the rest will have 25,000 seats in just 31,000sqm.
