19-Story Hotel Tower Proposed for the Sunset Strip
New tower would rise next-door to a Marriott Edition hotel complex.

by STEVEN SHARP on October 06, 2017, 3:55PM

With work slated to begin soon at the Melrose Triangle development, the Charles Company will now try its luck with another iconic project on the Sunset Strip.

According to Wehoville, the developer has filed plans with the City of West Hollywood to construct a 19-story hotel tower on the Sunset Strip, next-door to the new Marriott Edition. Plans for the high-rise structure at 9034 Sunset Boulevard call for 185 guest rooms, 14 apartments, event space and ground-floor commercial uses. A four-level, 550-car garage would sit beneath the tower

Personally, I like this one a lot! This would be right next door to the new Marriott Edition currently under construction, would be a great addition to the Strip!

Wow, a real eye-grabber! Congrats to the LA metro for finally getting something interesting. An elegant resort look very appropriate for the area.

This is BH adjacent and somewhat similar to what is going on at the other BH borders at CC and Beverly Center areas with the Caruso, Meier and Chinese developments.

Interesting to see if this gets a WeHo haircut, which would really ruin it.

Wow, I like it a lot too. Like Pestie says, it was about time something "atrevido" came along...especially for this area near "Tinseltown".
Looks like The Flintstones.
True. The continuing trope there was that they had all the modern inventions but built them with stone age technology: out of stone, rougher, asymmetrical.

Now, designers design that way to show they are post-industrial instead of pre.
Los Angeles has a grand tradition of programmatic architecture. This would make a fine headquarters for the International House of Pancakes : )

First thing I thought of too. Downtown Bedrock. Along with that other proposal in downtown. Imagine them, side by side.

An interesting conundrum: is this faux paleolithic architecture or Googie revival architecture, influenced by the space age? Or both?

I am guessing that the designers did not have IHOP in mind; more like a postmodern take on Capitol Records (which themselves are pretty stone age by now).

Proposed Sunset Strip Tower Moves Forward With a Height Increase
The 22-story development calls for a hotel, apartments, and street-level retail.

DECEMBER 03, 2018, 9:00AM STEVEN SHARP

An initial study published by the City of West Hollywood has revealed design changes to a proposed high-rise development on the Sunset Strip.

Charles Company, the West Hollywood-based developer which owns the 1.29-acre site at 9016-9034 Sunset Boulevard, calls for razing a collection of small residential and commercial buildings to make way for a 496,000-square-foot mixed-use complex. Plans call for a 22-story building which would feature a 237-room hotel with approximately 12,500 square feet of ground-floor commercial uses and 10 units of affordable housing facing Harratt Street at the southern property line.

R&A Architecture + Design is designing the 245-foot tower, which is slightly taller than the 19-story structure originally proposed one year ago. The building's narrow, circular footprint is intended to preserve view corridors, while its cantilevered balconies and staggered floor heights are used to give the project a unique profile.

A key difference from the earlier iteration of the project is its treatment of the Crosby Building, which is located at 9028 Sunset. Rather than razing the building, Charles COmpany intends to retain, restore, and relocate the two-story structure to the northeastern portion of the development site.

Parking for the entire project would be located within five subterranean levels, with accommodations for a maximum of 547 vehicles.

Construction of the 9034 Sunset tower is anticipated to occur over 24 months, although a groundbreaking date has not been announced for the project.

Perfect location for an IHOP
LOL. Already covered that back a few posts. They could have their world HQ even. Maybe shared with a some "spin-offs" of Capitol Records?
