What brisbane is lacking

I find it interesting that brisbane is becoming such a hot market and quite frankly things are changing alot yet I still see it lacking alot compared to its other eastern seaboard brothers.

Transportation is one issue where we are lacking. We are having to dig tunnels everywhere because of a lack of thought and spine to implement things in the past. I mean they ripped up the gold coast line only to relay it 30 years later wtf. (I recently did a map of all the proposed transport infrastructure - http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=U...6768780462305.0000011260315f9f89873&z=10&om=1 ). Gee we cant even offer a decent 24 hour train service even on thur fri sat sun when all the clubbers are out and about.

Icons. We have nothing. I know you cant make something an icon but we have nothing really that could become an icon. We have the gabba and the brisbane river. But we have no really interestingly designed buildings. Our bridges are boring (we certainly got the worse hand when it comes to story vs sydney harbour bridges). I look at melbourne and some of their buildings look great and are designed to attract attention (the eifel tower shaped building and the flame throwers). Our newest structures are the new state library and GOMA both of which are quite boring in design and from what I have heard cut down from what they were ment to be.

I dont know. Brisbane is a great city, just seems a bit bland and everything is cut down and added as an afterthought.

I respect to the Gold Coast line, yes it was ripped up and rebuilt 30 years later, but u have to understand WHY!!! They were different times back then, people WANTED to drive, that's why they ripped it up to build the old Pacific Highway, and hence why Station Streets in Nerang and Mudgeeraba face the M1.

And also, the old line was shockingly windy and very slow. It could never have been upgraded to such and extent where it could run IMUs at 140Km/h. It NEEDED to be ripped up and rebuilt on a new alignment. Simple as that.

Anyways, back to the main topic. I think a lot of people don't give Brisbane all the credit it deserves. Like yes, there is a lot of work that could be done to make it a better city, but damn a lot has been done, particularly in the last decade. The most obvious example to me is the urban renewal project in Fortitude Valley, New Farm and Teneriffe. What we have there is fantastic urban planning, and great urban design on street level, which makes the area a more liveable place.

Brisbane never was 'PLANNED' in the way that Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth were. We have to live with that, and work around it and frankly, at the moment, we're doing a damn good job.

^^Exactly, just look at photos from 10 or 15 years ago and it is quite amazing. Every city worldwide is lacking something.
Lets not all develop an inferiority complex here. Maybe the recent BrisVegas epithet ascribed in a couple of other threads has stirred this up a little.

The bottom line = Sure it would be nice to have a bloody white curcy opera house, but despite our lack of icons, and all the other B/S associated with big cities - this city is a farking great place brothers.

End of Story

Im not saying it is not a great place to live. I would take brisbane over sydney any time. I have not been to melbourne so I cannot comment on that comparison.

I must agree, there has been substancial improvements in the last decade from what I can see.

Can someone tell me why the CBD of brisbane is so small. Wouldnt it make sense to include spring hill and maybe the valley into it soon?

^^Will extend a bit into the Valley, Spring Hill is littered with Heritage and is essentially undevelopable, South Bank is staying with a 20 storey height limit near the WJ Bridge and will continue with the stuff around 13 storeys for the rest. Kangaroo Point is pretty tall.

I really think our suburban centres need to catch up with the densities and take some of this pressure off the CBD. The PT should be easier to deal with then also.

we need tourist attractions. (sorry lone pine and south bank doesnt cut it) if you ask a backbacker why they are in brisbane, theyll tell you for a stopover to the north or south or for money.

brisbane needs some alternative attractions that would be in competition with the gold coast, yet offer a different experience.

I wouldn't worry about a lack of 24 hour trains, I lived in London for years, one of the major world cities, and the tube stops around midnight.

And don't knock the Story Bridge, I think it is terrific. Sure it's not as good as the SHB, but that is a world icon and pretty stiff competition. The Story Bridge is a pretty good second.

Brisbane is never going to be a huge tourist city, you can't build niagra falls or bondi beach, but it is a terrific place to live, and as we all know the locals love it.

Believe me, its not the hype that Victorians on here tell you. Sydney has a big city feel to it, but its the only city in Australia that does.Even then, its a long way behind major OS cities.

Icons - well again, only Sydney rates here with the Opera House and Bridge (other Aussie icons tend to be natural, like Uluru and Great Barrier Reef). A city doesn't need an icon to be really good or interesting.

Quality of buildings - there are plenty of excellent buildings recently built or due to be built soon in Brisbane. Again, the Melbourne comparison is somewhat superficial - Melbourne has some nice architecture but it also sure has its share of butt uglies (the brown monstrosities on Collins Street - only their mother could love them).

Compactness of CBD - this is great - surrounded by a wide river on each side and giving kick arse density with the added bonus of all these 200m + buildings now built, under way, or soon to be built.

Just relax and enjoy it man.

^^ Don't bag Melbourne, we're very sensitive down here! Brisbane IMO doesn't lack anything, I mean you can't just look at another city and say Brisbane should have something like that. Brisbane is unique and better for it! Also can't wait to see how the old girl's looking in ten years, it'll be a completely new city.

When did I bag it? Read my post again and don't be such a fuckwit.

Brisbane is hitting its critical mass, and becoming far more interesting. Has to get an 'urban' idealogy for central area, which is still treated as a scarey negative concept and treated as fast drive through rather than a people oriented destination. Um.
Excuse me, "Fuckwit"? Well it's good to see the art of conversation is alive and well. But I think you're forgeting that I'm made of rubber and you're made of glue, so whatever you say bounces off me and sticks to you.

Haha good job
well ive been living in Canberra for the past 9 months, and it is definetly lacking a lot of things that Brisbane has.

Public Transport, decent night life, variety of decent shopping centres, culture and serious construction

This city has enough landmarks to make Washington blush, yet it doesnt pull many tourists or back packers.

I think people hold landmarks in too high a regard, though if i am wrong, i heard the NT Govt put Ayers Rock on Ebay to boost revenue, last bid was around $126.

We could cut it up in little pieces and build a sculpture of Peter Beattie, the pieces we dont use could be sold to china.

I'm sure plenty of tourists that flock to see particular landmarks have no idea what they are actually looking at or what is significant about it. Most of them probably don't know anything about it's history and are really just looking at it because they saw it on telly.
