That's Habitat 67 in Montreal.

I agree that Brutalism is probably the ugliest style. However, I think it can be done right:

^That's the Robarts Library in Toronto and I genuinely like it, but it's the exception to the rule. 99% of the time Brutalism buildings are hideous. It would probably be for the best if the style went away and never came back.

I have a love/hate relationship with brutalist architecture. A great example of brutalism done right is the coffered concrete ceilings in the underground stations of the Washington DC metro. I also like brutalist buildings that are covered in overgrowth.

Then there's this concrete abortion in Milan :runaway:

Says everything about you, contradicitng yourself being the most prominant image of you!
Pretty much everything post-war is crap. The words to keep in mind here are 'pretty' and 'much', which, when used in tandem, mean that helluva lot but not everything is utter crap.

Modernism and Brutalism found themselves very much in demand after the war. These styles reaped horrific damage on cities all over the World, sometimes destroying entire towns and in their 60 year existence they provided very few buildings of worth! Po-Mo was not much better either. However, as Botswana said we are getting better. Rogers, Foster, Piano, Nouvel, Zaha, Gehry, Libeskind etc etc are all fantastic architects producing incredible stuff. So, theres no contradiction in my posts whatsoever, if anything it is your posts that say everything about you, especially the fact that youre illiterate!

Yes, but there is not a single beautiful brutalist building. Not one. They're all godawful. :bash:

I also hate socialist architecture post-Stalin (love Stalinist Architecture). Almost everything built during the Khrushchev era was pure trash.

well, the worst is any real-estate-developers-non-architecture

including this kind of intensely sad patchworks

the neo-classical version is even worse - it's like a fat girl with high heels and short skirt trying to fool people she's classy.

Generic yes... Ugly no...

people would not aspire to a nice detached house if it was ugly.
People will aspire to what they consider success. Suburbs are awful, but it`s part of the American dream to own a soulless house with a white picket fence. Suburbs are very ugly, especially when there is no variation in architecture and just bland replicas everywhere.
