What Is And What Should Never Be: Glasgow's Eyesorest Buildings

There are some buildings in Glasgow which are so bad that I actually curse out loud whenever I see them. These are buildings which make me want to grab the throat of the architect who designed them and yell into his face 'Your building f*cking sucks!', and then bite off all of his fingers. I hate them. I really do. I hate them even more than I hate the haemorrhoids which will take up residency in my arse in a couple of decades from now.

Maybe you feel the same. Maybe there are some buildings in this city which fart in your face whenever you look at them. If so then hang the bastards here. Better to do that than spend time in jail.

Here's one f*cker I really detest...

Jurys Inn, Jamaica Street

I would say that this building is the visual equivalent of being trapped inside Val Doonican's underpants.

+1 for Jurys Inn. Horrible building.

I quite like the glass sided elevations of Cineworld especially at night.

This Holiday Inn Express sucks as well...

Student Accommodation Blocks, Collegelands

Incredibly, this development is more terrible than Anne Widdecombe in suspenders. To paraphrase George Orwell - it is a beige jackboot stamping on a human face forever.

The student one is the worst there. Anything involving render in our wet climate is a no from me. As for Jurys Inn et al, have seen far worse in many more cities. Visit any US city and you'll see millions of buildings just like that. In Glasgow they should be filler buildings, and should not occupy prime sites. I think as more of the old buildings are restored, and some nice new buildings are constructed, we won't mind these "eyesores" quite so much?

The Plaza, Eglinton Toll, 2009 (Southplace Homes)...

The Gateway, Eglinton Toll, 2007 (Saphire Group)...

The Turdova Building, Eglinton Toll, 2004 (Southplace Homes)...
[G2097 cannot find image but has made appropriate substitution]

Mizu, Finnieston, 2006 (Southplace Homes)...

I didn't know Southplace Homes were responsible for Mizu until now. If one good thing came out of the credit crunch, it was the demise of those bastards.

The Plaza is a fucking horror of horrors!

I admire your optimism, Gommsta.

However, for me there are buildings in Glasgow which are irredeemably awful. If they possessed consciousness then I suspect that they would revolt at their own existence and cry out to be annihilated. For example...

Graham Hills Building, Strathclyde University

If this building became flesh then it would be John Major. Never look at it when it's raining, or you will lose the will to live.

I'm working in an office on Hydepark Street in Finnieston today and can see that piece of shite out my window. I was actually thinking about starting a thread about all the crap buildings around here and then I logged on and found this one. Just over the river from here there's the Etap hotel and the Alea Casino. I would like to cause untold pain to the troglodyte that let those two dangleberries get through planning. I don't want to post pics, it would cause me too much sorrow.

John Major lol!
Couple of threads weve had on here before for all you youngsters. :)

No matter what is said, there will always be these buildings that will need to be demolished well before their lifespan, there is no need for them if the buildings were planned rightly and paid more attention to detail and construction impositions by the planners, but i'm affraid these building are passed by snot nosed kids that been given these jobs by not what they know but whats handed to them under the counter < ( they should be hanged upside down and purged) IMO.

Leave the scaffold up award

This building made me whimper when I first saw it.

Even now all I can say is: 'Keep the stonework and start again.'
Good topic. I agree with all.

I don't know what this building is called but it is horrendous

All Glasgow Uni.

After you've been subjected to this building, no one would blame you for dynamiting every salmon river in Scotland.

How come the pictures are as old as shit? Great thread though!

They're all just following tradition at Glasgow Uni though. After all, the Gilemorehill building itself is just a boring Gothic Revival lump. Imagine what could have been sitting on that hill if Alexander Thomson had got his hands on it: biggest missed opportunity in Glasgow's architectural history.

I took the pictures this morning, Ultima.

The date on the pictures baffles me. I've put it down to the camera being utter shite. I think my mother got it free with a rubber frying pan she bought from QVC.

As for the picture hue, I don't know if it was me or the camera seeing red as I photographed the buildings.
