it's a "big box" retailer (like wal-mart)
Hypermarkets - Just think of huge ugly cheap metal boxes like any IKEA outlet but instead of selling furniture there are huge shops like Geant, Carrefour, Auchan, Tesco (in Poland) selling all kinds of things, from bathtubs to fresh fish. I just hate them and they are so huge that when i want to food i cant find anything...
^^ yesterday I was shopping in Auchan (Gdansk) and I couldnt find anything I needed, its like looking for a needle in hay, and I found that there are 87 cash boxes, isnt crazy?
haha i was travelling yesterday by car from Warsaw to Vienna, wanted to go shopping for some food for sunday in Auchan, Bielsko Biala and i wanted to buy some things fast was under stress, the whole thing took 2 hours. Its impossible to find anything, lots of poeple and im generally unorganized so it typically happens that i stand in the center of the place and want to buy something to drink - i look for 5 mins - its right on the end of one side, then i want to buy some magazines - look for 10 mins- right on the opposite side of the place i was.
In Slovenia, Mercator is the dominant local "hypermarket" chain; it also owns many small stores. In recent years, the company has expanded well into Southeastern Europe.

Here's a typical Slovenian Mercator:

And here's a Mercator hypermarket in Split, Croatia:

The comapny also owns the M Hotel in Ljubljana:

Mercator's biggest Slovenian competitor is Tuš
(which operates multiplex theaters in addition to hypermarkets). Like Wal-Mart, it also has its own gas pumps in some locations. This is the company's hypermarket/mall hybrid in the town of Celje, called Planet Tus:

Foreign hypermarkets in Slovenia include Interspar and Leclerc, but not Wal-Mart or Carrefour.

So big, so American. Way too big I think for densely populated European countries that praise identity so much. In Albania we have no such montrosities, although I must admit that it is not as much because of our good taste, as it is because they are not economically viable here.
Here we call them "supermarkets"... and we have wal-mart(of course), Superstore(A canadian chain that is actually still challenging walmart quite well :)), Co-op, IGA, safeway, Sobey, hmm... cant think of more at the moment... i suppose you could also list department stores like eatons (not many left at all), the Bay (oldest company in North America-Canadian), and zellers.

There might be more, but at this moment that is all i can think of.

I don't have picture of the ones here though... they recently just built 2 new superstores that are actually quite nice :), as well as 2 new walmarts, a new iga and another one that is just a few years old... there has been a lot of development here lately, but on the outskirts of the city, not too much in the city centre :(.
