The eurekas not a landmark - The sydney opera house is a landmark. Tourists arent going to come all the way from New York to see the eureka tower!
none it has the trams, the lanes, the old buildings, melbourne is a landmark in itself really, building a landmark would **** melbourne up and just look to tryhard imo, melbourne should be happy with what it is now
I don't think Melbourne needs one because IMO they are generally superficial and take away from other things in the city. By that I mean as a tourist visiting a landmark is something you really just look at rather than something that you actually experience. For example when I was in Canada I went and visted Niagara Falls, but the most rewarding part of the visit was the drive from Toronto stopping in little Canadian villages and seeing typical Canadians doing typical Canadian things. But that's how I see things, other people probably disagree with me.

I've thought about the landmark thing before and I reckon there is a set of criteria that most famous landmarks meet. In many cases I don't think landmarks become landmarks accidently but everything falls into to place in some magical way.
^^ when I first ever went to Paris the Eiffel tower wasn't the best part of my experience and likewise in NYC with the Statue of Libert et al....
Melbourne already has some good landmarks. The MCG, Flinders Street Station and Fed Square, the Royal Exhibition Building etc. etc.

They'll get nowhere if they decide simply to plop something superficial.
this topic has been done to death

trams, yarra river and the laneways are the most memorable Melb experiences.
Landmarks just kind of happen.....We know Melbourne is great as it is, even though a striking memorable structure/tower/building/statue doesn't come to mind for the International audience....so we say ok...that's ok, because we know how good the city is. The point I raise is......Do you think more people go to Bilbao Spain now than before the Guggenheim was built there....Picture Paris...so fabulous in many ways without the Eiffel Tower....or New York without the Statue of Liberty and Empire State Building....Even with the WTC gone..the skyline looks like ??? a skyline but those buildings made it instantly recognisable the world over whether you liked them or not.....and closer to home....Sydney has a fantastic Harbour..but that big steel bridge and white building nearby somehow enhance it all a bit....they are usefull structures but are also Landmarks...so maybe one day something really special will stand in Melbourne..well.something that someone anywhere will see...and say..hey..thats Melbourne !

Agree wholeheartedly red but patience is called for, I believe we will have a landmark or " skyline signature " sometime but you can't force it coz when you press you get less and we wouldn't want that.

In my view Melbourne is slowly attaining or crystalizing out its essence and when enough people in the right places feel that essence magic happens.
A statue of the Australian Cricket team. Definitely need more statues.
IMO i think Grollo tower would have done it for us, nothing gives more recongition to a city than it having the tallest building in the world.
i think Eureka will become its landmark. Its an 300m iconic structure and now with its observatory it will be a much visited building. A "must visit" when in melbourne to tourists. Its worlds tallest apartments "to roof" until the Dubai towers will surpass in 2009.
I think it will become a member of federation of towers which will start to become well known around the world. This happened to Rialto after an observation deck as created in 1994, some 8 years after completion.

ahh reading that article again makes me wanna burst out into tears lol, got anymore lol?
I like Melbourne the way it is.The future will look after itself if we keep doing the things we do best and create an overall interesting lifestyle experence for visitors and locals alike.
Unique"Icons" are hard to create as many just come from nowhere at a particular place in time and how many are there in the world at the moment 10- 20 including all the ancient ones like the pyamids?
Building a unique city is itself the most important thing not some implanted superficial "icon"
