Where do the Chicagoans go when they go?

2306 Views 6 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Northsider
So me and my friend were discussing where a lot of Chicagoans move from Chicago, like migration patterns. From what we could conjure up a lot of Chicagoans end up in San Diego, Phoenix, and Tuscon. I remember when I went to San Diego there were so MANY Cubs hats walking around, and no the Cubs were not in town playing the Padres.

So from your experience where do Chicagoans go?

I have noticed most go to warmer climates, you barely hear of anyone going to the East Coast or any other part of the Midwest. It's usually west or southwest from my experience.

Actually, most people who move do so within a relatively short distance. "Migration potential" is calculated

The IRS publishes annual migration figures from tax returns; the Census also publishes five-year migration figures with the decennial census. But since that was so very long ago, let's look at the IRS numbers from 2006-07 (http://mcdc2.missouri.edu/pub/data/irsmig/Migration_Profiles/Illinois.html). These are in persons [exemptions], not households [tax returns]. The numbers are county codes; don't have the patience to strip these out right now.

Yeah, a lot of Chicagoans in San Antonio.

We have several Chicago style hot dog shops.
I moved to Denver from the South Loop a year ago, but I expect I'll move back within a year.
Out here in Seattle, also met a lot of Chicagoan displacees.
Very interesting info. More importantly...people move OUT of Chicago?!?!!

jk, it certainly looks like warmth is a key ingredient to out migration. :-]
