Which cities in the Midwest produce the most clouds of "SMUG?"

6769 Views 61 Replies 27 Participants Last post by  NaptownBoy
The "Smug" concept, loosely based on a South Park episode.
In the episode a large cloud of "Smug" was created in San Francisco
from so many people driving Toyota Priuses, being politically correct, veganism, etc.

Which cities in the Midwest produce the most "smug" and why?

The son of a bitch that sits next to me at work has a huge Smug cloud surrounding him. Sometimes it covers our whole office, but not the city I guess. I've seriously thought about taking the fire hose to him to clean that shit off.....but I know it would just come back.
I don't know what good could possibly come from this thread.
Some other examples: excessive use of the word "organic" or "grass roots" effort/campaign/organization or "Pan asian" or "Fair trade," etc.

Why do you have to have such a negative attitude? j/k

None.
I think I know what is being asked, and in the context of the midwest forum, and specifically this thread, recognizing success and failure and being realistic about it = being smug.

Chicago is "smug" because they assume that they are the greatest city in the midwest in many different ways.......arguably they ARE.....so, IMO, it's not really being smug, it's being realistic.

Minneapolis is "smug" because it has been successful while many other large cities in the midwest have declined. This creates resentment towards Minneapolis and a feeling that Minneapolis is smug.
Madison has the most hybrid cars per capita in the US, as well as a ton of vegetarians, so I'm saying that.
well following the south park theme of smugness
which cities are therefore the most liberal?
and into hybrid cars per capita?
it would have to be madison.
it has to be the most liberal city in the midwest per capita,
what other cities in the midwest are ultra liberal?
college towns usually are....

Uh, Minneapolis? Not just ultra liberal, ultra liberal with money. Full of liberal "elite" or limousine liberals, or what we call here, "lakeside liberals".

They live lakeside in the best, most expensive Minneapolis neighborhoods.

Waukesha?
Liberalism aside...

1. Madison, WI
2. Schaumburg, IL
3. Arlington Heights, IL
4. Roselle, IL
5. Wheaton, IL
6. Palatine, IL
7. Barrington, IL
8. Barrington Hills, IL
9. Lake Barrington, IL
10. Anything with the name Barrington in it, IL

Seriously, if you want to see a dense fog of Smug just visit the northwest and west suburbs of Chicago. :bash: Nothing else in the midwest compares...

#1 Madison during the school year.
#2 Madison during the summer.
#3 Madison during spring break.
#4 Madison during winter break.

In all seriousness, Madison is a very nice town, and I'm quite sure most of the folks there are no more smug than those anywhere else, though they are right to be proud of their town. But being a state capital and home to a major U Madison does attract some pretty sumg folks who because of the cities position can be very lond smug folks. Same could be said for San Francisco.

South Park's great.

The only difference is that in San Fran, they sniff their farts out of wine glasses, in Madison, they sniff their farts out of beer bongs and beer steins.

When people talk about how liberal Madison is they're not refrencing the students. Madison has the whole hippy-let's plant a garden and eat vegan desserts thing going on, moreso with residents that have called Madison home for longer than two semesters.

There is obviously a wider agenda here. There are some things you really don't like that you think about a lot, no?
Minneapolis isn't ultra-liberal at all... it leans to the left but is hardly as liberal as Boston, San Francisco, or Seattle not to mention countless smaller cities like Berkeley, Madison, and Austin... and you act like the fabled and highly regarded "Lakeside Minneapolis" is the gold coast or the upper east manhattan...
