Which country has largest immigrant population of Americans?

Canada is a no-brainer, but which other countries hold a large population of American expats?

Mexico has somewhere between 600K and 1 million.
Why in God's name would anyone want to willingly immigrate to Mexico, when hundreds of thousands risk their lives to escape the country each year?

Mexico would be at the very, very bottom of my list of places to immigrate.

It's warm, sunny, and cheap in a lot of countries, but the majority of those countries have a much, much lower standard of living.

Then again, I suppose if one is loaded, one can buy a good life just about anywhere.

Also, Mexico is right next to the US, which makes it nice and convenient for those Americans who decide to settle down there. Makes it easier to visit friends and relatives. So not only is it cheap and warm, it's close-by.
how about ireland guys??
Overall, Mexican attitudes towards the USA are positive, so American expats feel more at home there.

Exactly. A regular middle-class American can live the high life in many countries outside Europe, Japan, and Australasia.

WRONGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

Mexico isn't Cuba. Mexicans come here to get jobs and go back to their country and buy a nice house for $25k. They aren't ESCAPING. They cross the border, get a fake soc, make some money, and usually fly back on a plane with a fortune.

The country has beautiful beaches, landscape, and decent culture. It just has, a comparatively nothing economy compared to us, right up the street, so they come here make American Dollars, which are worth much, much, much more than down there. It's all about jobs.
Today- I wouldnt know, but back in the 1700's England, France, Spain.

1800's- beside the 3 euro countries, Liberia, Canada.

Today- a wild guess but Canada and Germany???
There are thousands of Americans in just about every country.

My guess is for PERMANENT American expats, Britain and Australia (and Canada/Mexico) are tops. There are also a lot in places like Costa Rica, Phillipines, and Japan/Korea/Thailand/Taiwan.
mexico does seem reasonable, because there are many mexicans in the united states. many mexicans, whether they have always lived here or emigrated here, might choose to move to mexico to be with their immediate family or extended family.

i think other countries that might have decent amounts are places like japan and india. again, i think it would mainly be japanese people or indian people returning to their homeland to be near their immdeiate family or extended family.

I read once, speaking in percentages, that Costa Rica is one of the ones at the top of the list.

For example: 12 years ago, when I was living there we were one of the only Costa Rican families in the neighbourhood, almost every one there was from the US, and that wasn't just in our neighbourhhood, it wasn't a "little US" type of place either.

Now there are even more people coming from the US to CR to retire.
But all my budies were USers, and we spoke both Spanish and English together.
This is true.. I have visited Costa Rica several times before and there were Americans everywhere I went, not tourists but people actually living there. My parents actually bought a bunch of real estate down there, hoping to make their 2nd home in Costa Rica. This is all because 'Ticos' (Costa Ricans) are very welcoming of Americans, almost everyone speaks English, and it is a very clean and stable country.
1. Mexico- 1,036,300
2. Canada- 687,700
3. UK - 224,000
4. Germany - 210,880
5. Israel - 184,195
6. Italy - 168,967
7. Philippines - 105,000
8. Australia - 102,800
9. France- 101,750
10. SPain - 94,513
