OMA's White City designs unveiled
Published: 14 May 2008 12:56 Author: Richard Vaughan More by this Author Last Updated: 14 May 2008 13:22 Reader Responses

These are the never-before-seen designs of White City, west London, which were worked up by Rem Koolhaas' practice Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA).

The images, called Creative London, will be shown at a lecture at the RIBA given by OMA's Reinier de Graaf to be held tomorrow (15 May) as part of the RIBA Futures Fair.

As well as White City, which OMA is no longer working on, de Graaf will be talking through two other major schemes that the practice is currently working in the Middle East – the Waterfront City in Dubai and the Desert City in Abu Dhabi.

Speaking ahead of the lecture, de Graaf said: 'Once urban plans were designed to accommodate the masses, today the masses have to be seduced.

'If 25 years ago urban plans were still produced to cater to an actual demographic necessity – a more or less delayed response to a more or less urgent need – today urban plans are designed to attract the very population they are planning for.'

Joining de Graaf at the RIBA event will be London's Deputy Mayor Richard Barnes and BBC Newsnight correspondent Justin Rowlett.

This isn't for the BBC, OMA have produced a masterplan for the large industrial site to the north of the awful new shopping centre. In typical masterplan fashion, it proposes a new urban quarter with room for offices and shops as well as loads of new homes.

You can see the Westfield mall development in the render. Have OMA masterplanned anything else before? REm Koolhaus is a proven talented architect, but good architects rarely make good masterplanners.

Yes, one of the worst masterplan I've ever seen....Lille Europe, the area around the TGV station. The buildings are ok (built by other architects including De Portzamparc), but the layout is totally wrong.

The plan is to have a number of tall buildings. I myself took part in a consultation in Hammermith & Fulham and this area was designated as a suitable site for tall buildings.

I wonder what the chances of this getting planning permission what with the new Mayor.

The last remnants of the White City event were demolished only 2 years ago..the vabdabilt Squash Club was originally part of the walkway starting that strange looking building that stood at teh roun-a-bout.
