Why did Manchester bid to hold Uefa Cup final?

UEFA cup final

My other half is of Scottish heritage, and now that Rangers have made the UEFA final i've been informed that a mass exodus of near and distant relatives are on their way... Without tickets for the match of course.

I wasn't living in Manchester when it was the Champs League final, what was laid on for the fans in the city centre?

Also, I went to the World Cup in Germany, and they had loads of quality stuff to do for those ticketless fans, ie outdoor screens showing the match etc. Does anyone know of anything similar which will be going on in Manchester throughout the day?

THis match is going to be like the Liverpool - AC Milan Champions League finals. Or this years Man United - Chelsea final! The whole stadium totally taken over by one team. Come on Rangers.
Why did the authorities of your fair city decide to bid for the final if it cant cope with the influx of fans and basically tells everyone who wants to go not to turn up. If the Manchester authorities lack the ability to plan big events why bid? I mean how hard is it to arrange big screens, port-a-loos and some pre math entertainment.

Just want to see what the fine people of Manchester make of your police and councils shocking attitude to the Rangers supporter's is.
what are you talking about
Paul Simpson, of tourism body Visit Manchester, urged fans without tickets not to travel, but acknowledged the city was bracing itself for a unprecedented invasion of supporters.

He said: "Clearly there are going to be substantially more Rangers fans than Zenit fans.

"Manchester is used to hosting large sporting events like the Commonwealth Games and a few years ago we had the Champion's League final between two Italian teams, AC Milan and Juventus, and that went very well indeed.
"We could be having 60,000 or 70,000 Rangers fans coming down and they are very, very welcome, but we would urge them to only come if they have a ticket."

Mr Simpson said that hotel accommodation in the city centre had been fully booked for several weeks, and admitted the city council was taking a "cautious" approach to planning special fan zones in a bid to prevent ticketless fans travelling.
That doesn't seem unreasonable to me. If you don't have a ticket - football supporters are always discouraged from traveling, wherever they go....
Manchester police and council want the Rangers fans with out tickets not to turn up in Manchester for uefa cup final. They have been in the papers telling everyone not to go with out tickets and that all the pubs and shop will be closed as well as offical fanzones unless you have got a ticket. Totally out of order! Its a european final 200 milies form home everyone is going to go so they can say they were in the city on the day of the final. Why not just set up big screens in the city square and parks so everyone is happy and your econimey can benifit.

If your a football fan you would understand. Why cant they just get organized and welcome us all down its not as if warning us off is going to stop anyone from coming. Do you not think this will hamper Manchester's viability to win major events in the future?
I am a fan... duh! The press release says you are welcome... with a ticket. The release says nothing that no other city hosting a big footy match hasn't said before... Anyway, if you want to come getting a ticket should be easy - there won't be many for the other side I would have thought
Yeah but there is about an other 100 000 Rangers fans coming and we are only allocated around 15k. So if your team was going to a European final in Glasgow you wouldn't travel with out a ticket and expect fan zone with big screens? Its not that press relies its the head of the polices and councils tell you not to travel period. Tickets on tout websites are already well over a £1000.

that is the way of the world unfortunately, but I dare say you'll find a lot more tickets available nearer the time... also, arrangements are probably still in progress for the event. We haven't yet had all the details so if you haven't got a ticket, it's probably worth hanging on for a week to see what's happening.
Well if you here of any under 500 buy it and I will get it of you mate when im down. Thats the problem the police are in the papers up here today saying they will not make any provisions for traveling fans with no tickets thats why im slightly upset.
No one can stop any rangers fan coming down to Manchester. I say ignore the advice and go anyway. You'll all be welcome as long as there is no trouble. I'm surprised they are trying to discourage such a obvious cash cow.
Dont worry mate we are all coming and can I just say out of 9 euro away trips so far we have had zero arrests. Its just not very nice they will not set up proper fan zones with big screens to watch the match on it would also make it easyer to police etc. We always do this in Glasgow for european teams and have big screens if we have a european final. Why cant Manchester we would do it for City or United.
To be honest, I agree with the Rangers fans on this one. We should welcome as many fans as possible. As long as they don't cause trouble. And if they do, then arrest the troublemakers and let everyone else have a good time.

More fans = more money for Manchester.

Manchester has proved its ability time and time again to host successfully major sporting events, I severely doubt it will be judged negatively by sporting authorities on trying to being responsible like any other city hosting this event would.
Rangers are scum.
Just my opinion i may add and that does not reflect the opinions of Manchester as a whole.
For the sake of balance i must also add that Zenit fans are also scum.
Happy days.
Manchester don't want to put anything on for them because they'll smash the place up. They only want ones with tickets to come to the city. Moving an extra 80,000 people isn't on.
Why are we scumb and what city have we smashed up so far in our other 9 euro away trips this year?
