Victoria to premiere Wicked musical

Wednesday May 16 11:33 AEST

The Victorian government is trumpeting another major events coup - securing the Australian premiere of the worldwide musical hit Wicked.

Premier Steve Bracks has announced in London that the show will open at Melbourne's Regent Theatre in July 2008.

The musical has grossed $US500 million ($A600 million) at box offices worldwide and is now playing in London, New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, with new productions set to open in Japan and Germany this year.

Last October, it became the highest-grossing show over eight performances in West End theatre history, racking up more than STG750,000 ($A1.8 million) at the box office.

Based on the best-selling novel by Gregory Maguire, the show tells the story of the Witches of Oz, and how childhood friends grew up to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch.

The West End production stars two Australian actors, Helen Dallimore and Adam Garcia.

Announcing the coup at the Apollo Victoria Theatre alongside Dallimore, Mr Bracks said hosting major musicals such as Wicked was vital to Melbourne's tourism and events industry strategy.

"Wicked has received worldwide critical acclaim and it is a real testament to the strength of Melbourne's reputation as the theatre capital of Australia that the producers have chosen to premiere the show in Victoria," he said.

The announcement follows news last month that Melbourne would also host the Australian premiere of Monty Python's Spamalot at Her Majesty's Theatre later this year.

That's good news for Melbourne!! When will it come to Sydney? I was going to see this in London when I was there, but I saw We Will Rock You instead, which was amazing.

I think Bracksy has more important priorities at this time - like having a plan to secure drinking water for Melbourne - any plan! I think its incredible that he is pumping himself up on this BS announcement while the best he can do on water management is hope that it rains this winter. Trust me, in SEQ, there is a risk that the $5 Billion water grid is only going to be on line just in time. If Bracks leaves it any longer, you guys could be in real strife.

I presume water is required in the process of making wine - and I'm not talking about the miracle at the Cana wedding here:) Oh and BTW, these shows travel around Australia - its not just a coup for one city.

I believe water is used in wine making and considering people drink it I'd have a guess and say it has to be drinkable.
