Will Dublin Business School building Dame St. ever be redeveloped?

Its got to be the most hideous, oppressive structure in the city right alongside hawkins house.

This is the building.
How has it been allowed sit like this for so long? At such a prime location? It could be an amazing redevelopment if the scheme were to include a passage or new street to connect dame street to the entrance court of dublin castle and we could also demolish that other pile of crap inside the castle entrance. How was it ever even allowed to be built inside the castle grounds? What did we do to this once great city:eek:hno:
There used to be a large department store there called PImms but it was quite a plain building and really I think we could do a lot better, the link to the castle could be a really interesting aspect of the redevelopment.

This could be an amazing vista from exchequer street if that was a nice building, or a gateway building to the castle. Like georges st arcade.
The passageway between the george and ginos could also become a really nice laneway if some shop fronts were on it if the entire site were redeveloped.
Has there ever been any proposals to change this?
Its so bad that it manages to ruin one of the nicest streets in the city centre, it does as much damage to one of the most popular tourist areas in the city that a single building could possibly do

owned by the McCann Family (Fyffes) - probably too many Tenants in place to do a full development. If DBS move into DIT Aungier St but not sure they have the money.

Pimms Department Store was previously in this spot

Well tenants are simply on a lease..if they're told they're leaving then they gotta leave...they don't get to say whats what.

And yeh that old building was better but I really hate the monotony and repetitiveness of that and the current building. Needs a lot more variation on such a long plot.
Yeah it really stands out and brings down the whole area, especially with the nice architecture on the opposite side of the street and some interesting laneways in the area. Theres a few derelict empty units further down the street that badly need redevelopment as well.

I think the abundance of land in the Docklands has probably beed a hinderance to the rest of the city in terms of redevelopment over the past 15 years. In the next couple of years most of the plots will be filled so developers will have to look elsewhere for new space, hopefully that'll kickstart a lot of the dross in the old city centre getting a makeover.

Thats true. Hopefully we might get more interesting buildings there than in the docklands . I think in the docks the large plots, lack of site restraints, and very little context(due to the entire area being recently developed) led to overall very bland designs in that part of the city.
It would mean the end of The George, San Lorenzo, 777 - some really great Dublin places. Maybe they could do a deal with the developers to reopen in the new scheme, which would be wonderful. They could also do a full refurb, strip it back to the skeleton and redo it externally and internally whilst leaving the ground floor businesses in place.

Funny you should post this, OP. I was on Google Earth yesterday morning examining this very monstrosity and then was horrified to see the beautiful buildings it replaced on Archseek.

Just another deep scar in Dublin's long history of corrupt councillors and dodgy developers. :eek:hno:

That horrible car park behind it as well.

This entire city block is an abomination and should be demolished to be honest.

There's an opportunity here to create a route from Georges Street to Dublin Castle. You could have a straight line of sight from Exchequer Street to the Caste. This city block is crying out for some sort of Development Plan (not that they are ever enacted).

I notice you said building(s) it replaced? Ive been very interested to know what exactly was on the plot before. I know pimms was, but even though it was a large department store I don't think it was anywhere near as large as the current dublin business school building is. Do you know of any pictures of the area and other buildings that were there before they were demolished? Would love to see
This is one of those buildings that is utterly horrendous, but I almost never notice when I'm walking past it. The layout of George's Street really keeps the eye at ground level a lot of the time.

Dangerous footpaths?
Since when do we judge building by the rear view?

Dublin's finest Georgian streets look hideously ugly from the rear.
Dangerous footpaths?
Haha
No the interesting shops
The businesses below that building are its saving grace

To be honest he's mostly right in this case - there's a load of pedestrians on that street and very narrow footpaths. But yeah, there are also more interesting restaurants to drool over at ground level.
I walk on the west side of George’s street so I don’t have to look at DBS! Walking on that side is vibrant as the businesses are lively and the view to the other side of the street is lovely! At this point I’d love if they refurbished from the first floor up rather than knocking the whole thing and losing those businesses. If they knocked what would it be replaced with? Something like the ESB replacement no doubt - nothing special.

Is that a real possibility or just wishful thinking? Would make a lot of sense but DIT won't be vacating Aungier Street for a good few years.
