Fleet: 209 buses, the vast majority are Gilligs with a hand full of old New Flyers.

Metro Transit gets $3.8 million to upgrade buses

Metro Transit has been awarded close to $3.8 million by the federal government to upgrade its aging buses.
The Madison bus system is one of five metropolitan transit systems in Wisconsin getting grants totaling over $11 million.

The money is from the State of Good Repair Program, a grant program of the Federal Transit Administration of the Department of Transportation.
U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl, D-Wis., announced the grants in a news release Monday.

"Buses are a central component of public transportation systems," Kohl said. "It is essential these systems are maintained and kept in good working condition to allow individuals the mobility they need to get back and forth from their jobs, schools, or even the grocery store."

Metro Transit will be getting $3,786,500 from the State of Good Repair Program, the most awarded to the five cities getting grants in Wisconsin. Metro Transit will use the money to purchase 16 diesel buses.

Each diesel bus costs approximately $367,000, Metro General Manager Chuck Kamp said.

"We applied for additional funding for hybrid buses, but didn't receive all of the money we applied for," Kamp said in a news release. "Each hybrid bus costs an additional $200,000 to upgrade. Our priority is buses, so regardless, we are extremely appreciative of the grant money we've received."

Metro Transit was awarded a similar grant in 2012. Metro Transit is currently using $5 million from that grant to purchase 15 buses, install new fare boxes on its entire fleet and retrofit 75 of its bus shelters with benches and lighting.

The other grants include $3,779,605 to Janesville, $3,240,000 to Milwaukee, $660,000 to Beloit and $312,722 to Green Bay.

Aren't they building a streetcar in Milwaukee ?
They're planning it. It's not quite yet to the construction phase.

Here is the most recent article I've found regarding the proposed Milwaukee Streetcar. It actually refers to a denial for funding for an extension, before giving the current status in the background info portion of the article. Again, to clarify, a first stage has yet to be built.

Forrest wasn’t expecting the map to create the buzz it has, but has enjoyed watching all of the discussions surrounding transit in the city. "However it turns out, it’s a great discussion to be having".
