Embassy and the Residence of the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Warsaw, Poland
architizer
The designed building of the Embassy and the Residence of the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia combines the features of the historical Wilanow with the culture of the Arab countries. This situation was an opportunity to design an classical building resembling a palace, based on an axis plan combined with a French garden. The surrounding architecture suggests to use simple solids and rythm in the elevation. The simple block combines Polish and Arab traditional ornaments. The whole concept is based on a symmetrical of 4 squares grid referring to the geometrical pattern of Arabic mosaics and arabesques. Each field has a specific function: the Embassy, the Residence and the Ambassador’s Garden.
That's why there are three solids on a square plan. Two of them from the main street be-long to the Embassy and one belongs to the Residence. The composition is completed with the squared garden. The buildings are connected with passages integrated with greenery.
The Embassy Building:
It consists of two three-storey cuboids connected with a glass passage which is the main hall facing to the small garden. The facade of the passage has shape of a great stone por-tico decorated with a low relief depicting Arab motifs. The front of the facade is covered with greenery that is an important characteristic of Wilanow architecture. The windows are narrow and have a special rhythm. They are the “porte-fenetre” type with a railing made from arabesque design bars.
Front windows are covered by automatically controlled white onyx panels. A two-storey reception hall is situated in the main passage.
The Residence Building:
Three-storey cuboid is separated from the Embassy with a stone wall overgrown with greenery. The halls are lighted by skylight on the roof. The rest of the roof is covered with greenery.
A representative are is situated on the first floor and the private on the higher storeys.

Saudi Arabia's new Embassy is exceptionally demanding project, as well as architects and designers. State Customer requirements are in many respects stricter than the Finnish legislation.

When Saudi Arabia decided to build a new embassy in Helsinki Kuusisaari, project an international architectural competition was held. It was won by Finnish PES-Architects. The winning does not try to show Arabian architecture, but the subscriber culture is reflected, for example, the cladding glass surfaces of the pattern indications.

- We do not do any Arab houses, but each and every customer receives quite different depending on the building. This fits well with the Saudi Arabian embassy, the image Tuomas Silvennoinen of PES Architects.

PES-Architects has already earned a reputation in international architectural competitions. Its best-known works include Chinese Wuxi Grand Theatre.

When a subscriber is Saudi Arabia's state but the building will rise in Finland, the project will in many ways exceptional.

- The building is made of a foreign state land. They have different legislation and different design culture. We adhere to the customer, for example, safety instructions, but they must be adapted to the Finnish construction, Silvennoinen says.

To build perhaps the end of the year

Saudi Arabia's embassy in the design phase will be completed in early fall. Construction will begin no earlier than the end of the year and take a couple of years, estimates Tuomas Silvennoinen.

HVAC design consultant responsible for leading Reijo Auvinen FCG praises from the building "quite a unique fine".

- The design must be able to produce a plan in accordance with the requirements of the customer. Basically, it is a good level of Finnish design according to, but in some respects different, says Auvinen.

For example, showy lasiverhous on planning. There have to consider how to manage thermal loads so that the building heat in the summer and not too much in the winter no bet.

- The architectural material used in the façade shading, and in the winter part of the window is heated by electricity. All the apartments, in the entrance hall and in some other areas have underfloor heating. Sisäilmaluokitukseksi will be demanding S2 +, Auvinen says.

Cooling the hotel

The subscriber's specific requirements include cooling the living space. This is per apartment, resort-style solution to the model complies with the system, which is not generally used in Finland.

- This system works directly with refrigerant and does not use water, Auvinen image.

The exceptionally demanding classes are also building security and backup systems. A complete back-up power system using the Embassy can work even days, even if the electricity supply fails.

The Embassy of Finland may generate some new jobs washer led the design team, with FCG is included. The group has progressed offer to step in Saudi Arabia's embassy project in Kyrgyzstan.

New Saudi Arabia Embassy in Finland
NOT SELECTED

Embassies function as both national outposts on foreign soil and open showrooms. Our architectural concept combines these two sides. The resulting building creates a unique place for Saudis, Finns and the rest of the world to meet and challenge our preconceived notions about ourselves and each other. The embassy will become an instrument of diplomacy and better communication, a place which combines the characteristics of the two cultures.

The embassy and the staff residences will be built in the middle of the Kuusisaari island, and the ambassador’s residence 500 meters away on the island’s northern shore.

The shape of the 3-story-tall embassy resembles a dune or a section of bedrock, exotic and familiar at the same time. The building is conceived as a piece of modified Kuusisaari landscape: a rock with five courtyards, lush with forest, cut into it. The courtyards open parts of the solid volume to the public. The roof and walls are clad with grey granite. The perimeter walls defining the courtyards are covered with green wall plantation systems. Walls and gardens are aligned towards Mecca. The staff building consists of eight terraced houses, each with their own entrance at the front and lawn at the back. The building volume is staggered to accentuate the individual apartments in accordance with the area’s building code.

The program for the ambassador’s residence is divided in two. The two-story private villa is placed in the rear of the plot, while the representational spaces form a one-story pavilion by the sea. The descending landscape allows an indoor passageway to be built between the two volumes. Its front opens to the street and functions as the main entrance. Both buildings are clad with light colored stone in order to blend in with the neighborhood. However, the pyramid-shaped roof of the pavilion and the curved outlines of the villa make the residence an architectural entity of its own.
