World Financial Center

Designed by César Pelli, with Adamson Associates, the complex was built by Olympia and York between 1982 and 1988 on landfill used to build Battery Park City. The fill material came from dirt excavated during the building of the World Trade Center. wiki

Yep, those are definitely pictures of the mast being installed atop the North Tower, probably taken in 1978 or early 1979. Excellent find! :eek:kay:

A fascinating and superb historical photographic record of WTC and WFC. These photos are worthy of an exhibition illustrating the chronology of the area and its amazing transformation from the 60s to the present day. Perhaps many of the early photos are in the Skyscraper Museum in Battery Park City?

I remember visiting downtown NYC as a youngster for the first time in 1967 and was blown off my feet when I saw the structural lattice bracing of rust-brown steelwork on WTC1. It was just stupendous. I lived for a few years in Battery Park City in the late 80s and returned last year. What a difference. I always considered Pelli’s WFC as the natural 1980s successor to Rockefeller Center in its uniformity and interaction with the public (Galleria concerts, shops, restaurants, marina).

I didn’t think the former WTC captured the same feel and was always a bit sterile in its grandiosity. Battery Park City has developed into a wonderful community which emulates in its style 19th century New York. A great success.

Thanks to all (especially Desertpunk) for displaying such a grand photographic record of this area and its destiny.

Some brilliant pictures in this thread , especially the WTC 7 construction pictures until now I had never seen a picture of WTC 7 under construction.

Does anyone have any pictures of the WTC site in August 1968 - December 1968?

Couldn't find any in the thread.
