World Youth Day 'will be a boost for sex industry'
By Sean Plambeck
www.news.com.au

THE sex industry is expected to be blessed with an increase in customers thanks to the most unlikely of sources - World Youth Day.

A report by Industry analysts IBISWorld predicted the 2008-09 financial year would see strong growth for brothels, strip clubs and prostitutes, primarily on the back of a marked increase in tourism levels to Sydney as a result of the Catholic Church's World Youth Day.

IBIS World senior industry analyst Ed Butler said the report did not suggest the 225,000 international pilgrims or clergy would be heading to brothels or strip clubs.

But the event, to be held from July 15 to 20, would also draw people from outside the church including tourists, support staff and media – and some of them would use the sex industry's services.

"Any major event will drive tourism, which is closely related to the sex industry… and World Youth Day will also bring out a certain number of non-religious people," he said.

"Growth would be estimated to be greater, but the religious nature of the event is likely to have a dampening effect on growth rates, as many of the visitors may have moral anxieties relating to this particular industry's services."

Mr Butler said Pope Benedict XVI's visit would give Sydney and Australia exposure in foreign markets, driving tourism growth after the event had finished.

IBIS World estimated the sex industry's revenue to grow from $1.13 billion in 2007-08 to $1.22 billion in 2008-09.

This would be growth of about 8 per cent for the next financial year, well above the 2.75 per cent growth for the overall economy predicted in the Federal Budget.

Ramada Khawley, function manager for strip clubs such as Men's Gallery and Pure Platinum, said she was not expecting an upswing in trading.

"We're not making any special preparations for World Youth Day," she said.

"But we'll keep a table reserved for the Pope."

Brothel madams spoken to by NEWS.com.au also expressed doubts that World Youth Day would be of benefit to their trade.

And it seems this is something they agreee with World Youth Day organisers on.

“I’d be surprised if the sex industry gets a boost from a religious event,” a World Youth Day spokesman said.

I find that very hard to believe on many levels! The main reason is because this event is actually having a negative affect on tourism, not a positive. It is now thought that the few that do come now will not spend much at all. It's actually going to be a very bad time for hotels, it's having a real negative impact on them. The "pilgrims" (call them what you like) aren't staying in hotels but in public places like schools and the olympic site, aswell is private homes. About the only thing they'll spend money on is minuture statues of the virgin.

It aint going to be the magic money spinner some people had been spruiking.

Never underestimate the spending power of hypocritical church officials away from their wives and families. :naughty:

I suspect Sydney's gay venues will also see increased trade next month...

^ those "officials" technically don't have wives or families - they abstain from that and are married to a higher power that satisifes their needs more than the flesh ever could. ;)

your second point is probably more valid though. in ireland a guy i worked with's best mate was training to be a priest but hung out at gay public places for quick man stimulant and felt it was ok because he wasn't having sex technically - no word of a lie :)

Priests can't marry, yes. Catholic church employees and laypeople aren't bound by the same rules.

I'm not surprised about the priest. As too many little boys know, even priests have their 'needs'. ;)

Sydney's primary and preschools may see an increase in unexpected visitors also. :\

LOL!! Yes, I hope some of the massive amount of $$$ being spent on security will go towards guarding our primary schools, pre-schools and hospital neonatal units.

The guy was training. A bit like the bucks night visit to a brothel before the wedding? Then the vows and sacrement of marriage are supposed to lock in the single partner for life.
Same kind of thing for vocations.
The way you behave before hand can just make it harder for you once the restrictions are in place.

...and of course you believed him.

Auslankan I have a large grey coathanger shaped bridge in Sydney that I could sell you for a good price.

Interested?

....on a serious note - of course there would be gay clergy out there, but so what? This forum seems to be heavily represented by gays - I wouldn't expect such harsh scrutiny of gay clergy here.

I know what you're implying, but it is of note that, by Government directive, all NSW public schools have in fact been made available to the Church for use as function centres and dormitories. Schools close to Randwick Racecourse (eg Randwick Boys, Girls High Schools, Sydney Boys, Girls High Schools) will have hundreds of "pilgrims" in residence...

No pun intended, of course.

A prostitute friend of mine told me that thousands of married men around the country will be breaking their sacred vows of marriage, and use the services of a brothel this week. Some have girlfiends as well, the bloody hypocrites.

since when is it ok to pay out catholics?
If this was a respective thread about muslims, aboriginals, homosexuals or any other kind of minorty group and these sort of comments were being made there would be uproar!

I dont think these comments are very appropriate and there actually quite offensive.

Catholics have been "paying out" on gay people and other groups for centuries. So don't get precious when the tables are turned.

I agree and besides threads on other religions/sexual orientation have always had an amount of jest in them. Being gay I certianly don't mind having a laugh and joking about Homosexuality, afterall lets not take life too seriously, but of course I do think I am able to mock the Catholic religion as much as I like considering they would rather have me dead.

I also dated a Catholic Priest for quite sometime in secrecy, it all got too much for me and I ended the relationship, but I know of a few Catholic Priests and other followers to indeed engage in Homosexual acts, I have been amongst it.

Nowadays Christianity in general is perceived as a soft target. In fact it's become "fashionable" (for want of a better word) to ridicule and denigrate it. It's almost as if these morons believe it makes them "cool" if they join in in belittling Christians.

As far as I'm concerned those that love to indulge in this type of spineless sheep behavior are a bunch of little weeds. The truth of the matter is members of religions like Islam for example are 100 times more backward and "homophobic" than the vast majority of Christians but I seldom see lefties get stuck into them with the same gusto as they do with Christians. The double standard is staggering.

I also find it hilariously ironic that pro-gay activists and their sympathizers demand and cry out for tolerance and understanding for their minority group of choice but at the same time quite readily dish out obscene vitriolic rants against their "opponents" (i.e. Christians). Pathetic really, I don't know how you expect anybody to take you seriously.

Don't get me wrong I don't have any love for Catholics or anything, couldn't care less about them to be honest. Just that it'd be nice to see a real primitive religion like Islam cop some flak for a change. But I think the fact that they won't stand for it and merely turn the other cheek ( like most Christians do) might have something to do with it. lol
