Singaporean firm wins $74 m Yangon construction contract

Bouygues Construction has won a US$74 million contract to build the second phase of Yangon's Star City in a joint venture with Serge Pun's SPA Project Management Ltd.

"More than 500 staff and workers will be employed on the project and will be trained to modern construction techniques. Know-how transfer will be one of the key factors to success of the project," said the Singaporean company in a statement released on Thursday.

The prime residential estate will feature 4,980 apartments, car parks and community facilities along the Bago River in outer Yangon.

It is the first contract of Bouygues Construction in Myanmar since the suspension of economic sanctions.

Bouygues Construction subsidiary Dragages Singapore, in a joint venture with SPA Project Management Pte Ltd, has been awarded a € 74 million (US$ 100 million) contract by Thanlyin Estate Development Ltd to design and build the second phase of Star City, in Myanmar.

The residential estate, located along the Bago River in the outskirts of Yangon, will feature 4,980 apartments, car parks and communal facilities.

The Dragages Singapore led joint venture will undertake the engineering and construction of three blocks of eight-storey buildings, and two blocks of 12-storey buildings totalling 114,000 m2 of gross floor area together with associated infrastructure.

Work is scheduled to start this month and is expected to take 33 months to complete. More than 500 staff and workers will be employed on the project.

This is the first contract of Bouygues Construction in Myanmar following the opening of the country and the suspension of international economic sanctions.

The construction project is subject to final approval by the Myanmar Government.

Bouygues signs €74m Myanmar contract

Bouygues Construction subsidiary Dragages Singapore has entered the market in Myanmar - formerly Burma - with a €74m (£63m) contract win.




This is the first Bouygues contract following the opening of the country and the suspension of international economic sanctions.

It will work with SPA Project Management on the contract for Thanlyin Estate Development to design and build the second phase of Star City. The development on the outskirts of Yangon will feature 4,980 apartments, car parking and community facilities.

The Dragages Singapore-led joint venture will undertake the engineering and construction of three blocks of eight-storey buildings, and two blocks of 12-storey buildings together with associated infrastructure.

Work is planned to start at the end of April 2013 this month, and the project is due to be completed in less than three years.

More than 500 staff and workers will be employed on the project and the the joint venture will provide training in modern construction techniques to contribute to the country’s development.

Thanlyin Star City, Myanmar





Thanlyin Star City is a mixed use residential and commercial community on 420 acres of Bago River frontage. It is adjacent to the existing Thanlyin Township, approx 10 km. east of the Yangon city centre. The Project is owned by Thanlyin Estate Developments.

The developer employed Meinhardt through the contractor (Bouygues) to undertake a Value Engineering study on the existing design.
