Japan in 1968 :) Pictures from http://www.biologie.uni-hamburg.de/b-online/world/japan/japan.htm
© Peter v. Sengbusch

Danke schön Herr Sengbush!!!! :master: :master: :master: :master:

Tokyo in 1968 (some from 1964)

Imperial Palace area

Hibiya douri / Shinbashi

Night pictures from the Tokyo tower observatory!!

^That lonely scraper is the Kasumigaseki building (156 m/512 ft), Japan's first skyscraper completed that very year (1968)

Some 35 years later, the Kasumigaseki is still there in this picture from tokyoyakei.jp

(Bright box in the left)

These blurry ones below must be in Akasaka, right?

Ueno station

1964 Olympics!!
Swimming at one of Kenzo Tange's masterpieces!!

Night shots in Asakusa

Kyoto in 1968

There are many other pictures from Kyoto, but being focused in shrines, temples and the castle make little or no difference with today's images.

Around Osaka station - 1968

Hiroshima in 1968 (23 years after the bomb)

That's all. Mr. Sengbusch has also many pictures from 1984, I'll post those later.

Vapour.Awesome pictures.

The cities were so low rise back then. Some things look the same and others very different.

I never knew Kyoto had Trams(Trolley cars).

Fantastic!

From a linguistic point of view this pic is interesting as I don't think the 'ki' kanji in this shot is used any more in Japan (though I've seen it in China and Taiwan). Is that correct?

Japan: 気 (ki)

Taiwan: 氣 (qi)

Mainland China: 气 (qi)

On a related note, I noticed that fromthe signs in these old pictures, the usage of Kanji was quite heavy back then compare to today. I could read almost everything in those pictures and I feel like if I were there, I wouldn't have gotten lost just by reading the signs. But from seeing more recent pictures of Japan, it seems like Kanji is used less and less and are replaced by English-imported words written in Katakana.
