I created this thread a few years ago and inadvertently forgot to add the poll. In that time, we've had a few new contenders, so I'm doing this again for 2014. Plus, it sort of showcases some of our finest, all in one thread!

Which building is your Favorite Southern Tallest? Why? The crown, the facade, the use, location, prominence, date of construction, etc? Tell us why! Please don’t judge it merely because of height, it’s in your city, etc.
(To keep this thread open and fun, please avoid "Mine's bigger than yours" discussions).

Below, I've posted the buildings for reference, along with the poll to vote. Thanks!

1.) Bank Of America, Charlotte: 871 Feet, 1992

I like a lot of these buildings so it's hard to choose just one, but Cesar Pelli's 100 North Main in my hometown is hard to beat for me. I love the Moravian characteristics included in the design and that it is the world's only granite domed skyscraper.

I don't know what it is about that AT&T building in Nashville that I hate, but man do I loathe that building. It just looks stubby and weird. I dunno. Nashville deserves a better tallest.

I chose BOA (hometown cooking and just love the look) but man for me, Devon is a close second. What a beauty.

BOA Corporate Center in Charlotte is still my favorite. Architecturally it's great, a Pelli masterpiece in fact, and I think it does a decent job at the street level. Some of these towers are a bit suburban at the street level unfortunately.

I like this thread a lot.:)

I'm pretty surprised Oklahoma City's Devon Energy tower doesn't have more votes. It's really something special.:)

Of course I voted for Bank of America Charlotte.

I think Devon tower looks much much more akward in the OKC skyline than BOA did here in the early 90's

But it's a good akward to have! I wouldn't mind having that problem here.

It's not that I don't have love for Texas. Since this thread has gone pretty well, I'd like to make another one showcasing other Southern Cities. I really like to bring attention to oft-overlooked localities. Asheville, Roanoke, Baton Rouge, Mobile, etc. My next will include places like Charleston, W.V., Dallas, Houston, Virginia Beach, Richmond, Greensboro, Jacksonville, Memphis, etc. I find it neat to have them all lined up in one thread and see how beautiful they all are (except Richmond's...sigh).

re: Oklahoma City's Devon Energy Tower.

When I first saw it when it was completed, I sighed and said to myself "..yet another plain glass tower..."

But after a while it started growing on me...and I've become a huge fan. Yes it towers over it's surroundings in a less-than-graceful way, but it seriously packs a punch to it!

Just a couple distinctive ~30 floor towers added to the skyline, and Oklahoma City will become a gem.

Based off of the choices provided: Bank of America Corporate Center in Charlotte.

Truly an elegant tower which would fit well within most skylines across the U.S. The crown and its exterior lighting is why I like this tower.

Also the George Washington Memorial Masonic Building is in Alexandria, VA

How can any skyscraper in the South compare to Bank of America Charlotte?

It's closest rival, IMHO, is Atlanta's One Atlantic Center....another stunning gem that was also built in the late 80s/early 90s post-modern era:)

It would really be something if One Atlantic Center could be transported to Uptown Charlotte!
