What Are The Safest Cities In Canada?

The safety of an area is always top of mind when searching for a new home. Statistics Canada recently released their study on police-reported crimes in 2015. The 2015 report examines the Crime Severity Index (CSI), which measures the volume as well as the seriousness of each crime in comparison to others.

This year marked the first time in 12 years that Canada experienced an increase in CSI -- up five per cent year over year. The overall volume and severity of violent crime was up six per cent, while non-violent crime was up four per cent from 2014 to 2015. The significant increase in Alberta's police-reported crime contributed to the national increase. On a positive note, however, the CSI is still 31 per cent lower when compared to ten years ago in 2005.....

Toronto is third-safest? I thought gang-related activity was rising. Or is that Mississauga or something?

I was also under the impression that Hamilton and St. Catharines were a little more on the less-safe side because of the blue collar roots and relative lack of economic development.

Not trying to stir up a controversy, and crime itself is relative (I would guess all of Canada is safer than Chicago, for instance, and the United States is safer than pretty much all of Mexico, it would seem), but I thought the Golden Horseshoe had relatively more crime than most other places in Canada. Maybe that's my bias based on spending time in that area.

In 2012, my county (Essex County) had FIVE of the safest communities in Canada over the population of 10,000.

Amherstburg was the safest community in Canada followed by LaSalle. Tecumseh and Lakeshore were fourth and fifth respectively and Kingsville was tenth.
1, 2, 4, 5, and 10!

Fancy that? The most Southern county in Canada, out of the entire nation had that many towns in the high rankings.

Not sure where they stand now, but impressive to say the least.

Here is an interesting insight in how we view each other as cities. Despite the fact that in reality Toronto is one of the safest cities in Canada, people across Canada view it as one of the most dangerous.

Canadians view Toronto as one of the most dangerous cities in the country despite a crime rate that actually places it among the safest, a new poll has found.

Mainstreet Research asked 4,231 Canadians for their opinion on whether 15 major cities are safe or unsafe.

The poll revealed that 47 per cent of respondents view Toronto as unsafe compared to 46 per cent who view it as safe and seven per cent who weren’t sure. Only Winnipeg had a less favourable rating (56 per cent viewed it as unsafe). Montreal was the other city in the bottom three (44 per cent viewed it as unsafe).....
