A. Great to see things moving forward.
B. I'm beginning to wonder if we'll actually see any of the commercial/ entertainment stuff built in time for the World Cup. Pending bad circumstances it appears by the end of '24 we'll be close to seeing 2 residential structures and the hotel completed, and presumably an office tower well under way. All of those projects, however, fall under the "no new infrastructure needed" category. So the question is, when will we hear about proposed schedules for actually filling in the Gulch and building the new street grid?

A couple of trains went past as I was in the area taking photos.

If you've ever wanted a good up-close look at a construction site without the need for a helmet and high-vis vest, just walk along the MLK Jr Drive bridge!

That is kind of a neat point, as the layman rarely gets to take in the projects like this without the use of a site cam or living/ working in a nearby high rise. Will have to check that out next time I'm downtown.

Will enjoy seeing these above street level at next season's AUFC matches.

I was waiting to see how they'd engineer their connections to, or distinctions from, the surrounding structures behind the roadworks. Thanks to these images it appears there will be a lot more direct connections than I anticipated.

@GunnerJacket Do we want to keep these all in this one mega thread or break it into individual ones for each building? Figure you and me will be adding to this after each ATLUTD match.
A single thread will suffice for now, but we can revisit when they announce more construction. I suspect it won't be before the end of summer before they begin the next phase, if that soon, so I vote to keep an all encompassing CY thread. Others are free to convince me otherwise.

BIG Update from yesterday (lots of pictures):

  • E2 Parcel is forming columns on its second floor above viaduct (6th overall). The 2nd floor slabs are complete except for the pool deck/exterior areas.
  • E1 parcel is forming its 4th floor. Seems like it'll reach viaduct level in two floors after that.

Great set, Brian! Thanks for these. Thrilled to see it above street level by the Benz.

Appears to be a lot of decking up under the causeway, but not anything that looks suitable for parking. Hmmm.

From the AJC this AM: Centennial Yards expects to have 8 buildings under construction by year's end. In addition to the two already going up, they're going to start on 6 others soon. Also got these nice new renders for the area.

"Eight acres across Centennial Olympic Park Drive from Mercedes-Benz Stadium will become an entertainment hub consisting of four new buildings and a plaza for fan events, the annual Peach Drop celebration and other gatherings. McGowan described it as “the heart” of Centennial Yards and hopes to break ground as soon as June. "

So looks like the apartment building in the SE corner by the federal towers. Not sure what the other 3 are. Looks like it could be a Battery like bar and food development section. The northern section of the Norfolk-Southern building is construction #7. Not sure what the 8th planned building is.

Here's the Urbanize article.

For comparison, here's a screen shot of their general proposals prior to this announcement, showing roughly the scope of buildings suggested behind the new hotel:

So take those structures out and drop this new entertainment district into place, instead. Certainly possible to get it done by 2026, but they better start pedaling quickly.

My question is, why have we not had more discussion about capping over the rail line in this area? Simply create new greenspace that allows safer and more seamless connections from the athletic venues and rest of the area? Don't need to do all of it (to maintain air flow underneath the streets), but certainly there are opportunities to be had.

Here's my burning question from the new renders: Are we finally getting another iconic water fountain/feature in the city or is this a sculpture in the plaza?
At this point I'm sure it's not finalized what will be in that space, but safe to say the application will leave it open for a water feature if that's an option they so choose. Assuming they don't already have the focal piece in mind, the design of the overall project will work it's way through review and permitting first, confirming the final layout and aesthetics of the structures, then they'll turn to the design team and finalize options for the plaza.

It's unlikely to be a splash-pad style fountain as that'd be a hazard (and thus an added insurance cost) for that particular setting, so the graphic to me resembles a static sculpture. (Something incorporating their logo for Centennial Yards, apparently.) What they're probably assessing internally is how they need the space to function, and how anything in that space will either enhance or detract from the ability to perform as a gathering spot. If they want this to work like the Power and Light District (KC) or Deer District (MKE), then they'll refrain from a huge thing that will obstruct views and distract from a central staging area. If they're leaning in another direction, then they absolutely should add a decorative fountain or iconic sculpture to enhance the space's tourist appeal.

The ATL on the roof will look good from Blimp shots over Mercedes Benz stadium.

AJC did a follow up interview/article with the Hawks owner. Apparently the plan for Centennial Yards include a 5,000 seat arena now. Guessing that is the structure with ATL on the roof.

Q: The entertainment district is expected to provide a new place for fans to gather right in the heart of downtown. How vital is that for Atlanta sports and for forthcoming events like the World Cup?

A:
I think there’s benefits on so many levels. A plaza where fans can gather of course is of great value, but so is a 5,000-seat arena and so is a whole bunch of restaurants and bars and 4,000 to 5,000 apartments. All of that is bringing life and excitement to downtown.”

AJC: Hawks owner says Centennial Yards could reshape downtown Atlanta

Why does that area need a 5k seat arena? You've got arena's at GT and now GSU, the GWCC can set up a small arena, and there are options in College Park, Marietta, and Duluth. If you're talking for concerts you've got again the GWCC, the Rialto, the Tabernacle, Ferst Center... Color me confuzzled about that idea.

The area needs bodies (ie: housing) and places for those bodies to gather to socialize. If he's thinking the area needs a lure to get people there when the larger venues aren't active, then I suggest the answer is another type of attraction. While I'd love something on the order of the Canton Tower, I'd settle for an architecturally impressive structure poised against an iconic space and fountain.
