Lakes Entrance is a stunning place with lots of potential to up international tourist numbers. Shame many miss out on places like the Prom, Lakes and Mallacoota AND just do Victoria's west coast only. Used to spend New Years at Lakes Entrance. Always had a blast of course.

The trouble the Lakes area of eastern Victoria is its a long way for people to go by road 6 7- hours so most international tourists give it a miss.
The spectacular Buchan caves up near Omeo suffer the same fate.Same goes for the wonderfull area around Eden and Bega.

Lakes enterance is great, i must admit most of my holidays are spent on the west coast ie. Apollo Bay, Lorne etc. and i dont mind the east coast past the mornington peninsula and phillip island and all that crap, sorry for anyone who lives there no offence intended just not my cup of tea, the further you go the better it gets tho.

I go to Lakes Entrance a fair bit - it's only an hours drive from here. It has a lot of potential but at the moment is a bit of an underachiever in my opinion. The natural scenery is breathtaking - driving northbound on the Princes Highway, your first glimpse of the Ocean is amazing.

This part of Australia is surprisingly issolated - after Traralgon there's really not much until you get to Batemans bay. Sale and Bairnsdale are the only two towns worth a mention, and are both barely over 10,000. None of the area is served by commercial airlines (although that is changing early this year with Traralgon - Canberra flights starting around march).

There's not much to do around here except go to the pub (and the major towns have nightclubs - there dodgy, but they serve alcohol and open late :) ). I really think that Lakes Entrance could be built up to a Mooloolaba sort of area with lots of touristy things. Crown also want to built a casino there.

Anyway, it is a good place as it is, but I think it could be much better.

It would draw people to the area. Bring in some high rollers and their families, they go off tell their friends etc... "Oh really good casino, near the beach, relaxing, beautiful" and it would gather reputation.

What?!?! why? i dont think u'd get enuff thru there to keep it afloat
The Defence business alone from the RAAF base here would make it viable. They would have a near monopoly of quality nightlife in the region.

it would also ruin a nice quiet place to go and relax, save the casino's for the city. Major development got into lorne and look at the place now, chapel on the beach.
Yeah but Lorne was always a beautiful, bushy, seaside town with loads of character whereas Lakes Entrance has always been a fishing port and a bit of a dump. Lakes Entrance is one of the few towns along the Victorian Coast which could actually be significantly improved by this kind of development.

Have to agree with you Grollo the town itself is pretty non descript and tatty and could do with a make over. It only comes to life at holiday time, if you go there in winter its usually very quiet so if a Casino can get a lot more visitors to the east coast then it would be worth doing..
The natural beauty of the Lakes is the real lure of the place.

Yeh, I think the East could do with a development of this sort, or maybe Warnambool or even Portland. The Surf Coast is getting wayy to crowded.

I dont think it'll be too much longer before we see a 5 star 10 storey+ hotel proposal for Lorne.

Hopefully in time the Sydney to Melbourne coastal drive will become popular with international tourist. Most do Melbourne to Adelaide or Sydney to Brisbane. The attractions and scenery are there in between but its the lack of tourist infrastructure that holds it back...and I'm not talking Flag Inns either. Also clever packaging and activies would help. I really love that Victoria is so compact and offers unbeatable diversity. Last time I was at Lakes we drove back the Melbourne a long round-a-bout way thru the Snowy Mountains. That was a great trip. What I haven't seen is whether the south coast of NSW would have potential...in places like Eden say. You'd need two decent overnight destinations to make the Melbourne to Sydney appealing. Unfortunately, don't think you'd get away with spending them both in Victoria - but I probably would. High tail it to Sydney from Mallacoota.

Grollo - your right about the 'chippy town from hell' character of Lakes Entrance but the beaches, lakes and location is wonderful. It just needs better planning cause as it is Metung probably would be better for most international tourist - especially older types. Lakes needs to loose the cheap and cheerful schoolies week image it has with some. Though I did indulge. Now that I'm 35 you can re-route them all to Lorne - lol
