no one here understood the point of this study....

Mercer surveys cities to which enterprises might send their workers and the costs attached to that.

You would notice that some third world countries fare way higher than G8 countries... why?

Because if you have to work for (let say) a week in Lagos, chances are that your company will not send you to the cheapest hotels over there because of some major security concerns. Instead, the company would *have to* send you to a heavily guarded 5 stars hotel which costs an arm and a leg. Same goes for the limousine, good restaurants (fear of poisoning) etc etc.

The cost of living calculated in this survey is for expatriates only! who need amneties for the duration of their trips and not for the average citizens who knows where to get his food (cheaply), where to sleep, etc ... in these respective cities.

Not to level(not even close actually) of Toronto and Montreal.
oh no doubt. No doubt.

My only point was don't make absolutes. It's not as clearcut that if you're an outdoorsy person you'll prefer Vancouver and if you're an urbane/nightlife/clubby person you'd prefer Toronto/Montreal.

I like the outdoors but i would say I'm more of a nightlife person than an outdoor person. And even though I'm sure that Toronto and Montreal have more of this than Vancouver, that doesn't mean that given the choice I would definetly want to live there over Van.

And I'm sure it goes the other way as well - that a person who's very outdoorsy can still prefer Toronto over Vancouver.

Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver all have a VAST list of differences that goes way beyond just the outdoors and the urban nightlife environment. Those two alone are nowhere near enough to decide a city to LIVE in. And describing them in these two absolutes makes Vancouver seem like a hippie village in the middle of the forest, and Toronto a noisy polluted skyscraper-ville with not a tree park or live animal in sight. Neither of which are true of course.

i can't speak for others but I myself assumed that simply based on the fact that Moscow and St. Petersburg (which is where I was born) are near the top of the list. Given the average russian salaries that seems completely idiotic until you realize this is the cost of living to a WESTERN standard - not to a standard that the average russian is used to. You can live in russia as well as you can live in London, Paris, or New York. It'll just cost you an arm and a leg.

"However Montreals nightlife is far ahead of both Toronto and Vancouver"
