Geography is the Great Decider here.

Queensland accounts for 22.5% of the area of Australia.

Together, NSW, Vic, Tas, ACT & SA account for about 27.5%: i.e., together with Queensland, that's about half. Area isn't everything; do a calculation on megalitres of water ...

Queensland will inevitably advance more than the Southern States, because it's still less developed. Yes, Brisbane has a rail link to the Airport, and Melbourne doesn't. On the other hand, Melbourne has a reasonably direct link to Darwin, and Brisbane doesn't.

When I was in High-School I won a prize ( :) ) and with the money I bought I book called "Australia's Open North", which, amongst other things, introduced me to the street plans of towns like Mareeeba and Chinchilla, which, until that time, I'd never heard of. One of the ideas the book canvassed was ... more states! One centred on Rockhampton, one on Townsville, one on Cairns, one on Alice Springs, and one in the Kimberleys.

The implication was that Northern Australia was too big (ultimately) to be governed from one centre just over the NSW border... and one just south of Sydney. OK, also two small cities a long way south.

I guess this idea doesn't carry much weight these days. For better or for worse, this is something which distinguishes us from America: six states can have a continuous family row; fifty states cannot. But then, an ongoing family rivalry is better than a Civil War. Does anyone give a toss whether Houston is developing faster than Atlanta or vice versa?

In which case, global warming and its consequences aside, Brisbane will eventually preside over a vast empire: a state larger than Texas!. To say nothing of the attendant Sun and Gold Coasts ... without the hurricanes.

Interesting to see how everyone outside of Victoria hates to see Melbourne doing well. Why is Oz so threatened by the southern city? It gets a lot more flack than anywhere else in the country.
It's looking absoutely superb at the moment - it's architecture and design is leading the country into a new era of urban glam. Let's celebrate it's recent successes instead of bitterly shitting over everything it does.

Sydney will always have the best harbour in Australia (scenically, that is).

Hobart will always have the best river and the best mountain backdrop.

Melbourne will always have the most impressive railway stations ... and the most impressive streets. Find another Collins St., or another St. Kilda Road!

Canberra will always have the most geometric layout. Without the public transport system Burley Griffin designed.

For me, it is great to see Melbourne doing well, but I really couldn't care who was doing best or worse in Australia at the moment. All places in Australia need to be developing, improving, but they are not. THAT is a shame. Like Anton said, it all goes round in circles, except the evergoing trend of Brisbane and to a lesser extent, Perth, outperforming other capital cities on population growth and economic growth. Melbourne had some catching up and dramatic reform to do 15 years ago, and fortunately this has now (and is still) happened, and the results are growth. Nonetheless problems can come about from high growth, as has been happening in NSW recently. Melbourne has a right to feel proud of her recent achievements, and those still to come, but still be aware of the potential drawbacks of those (same applies to all cities btw).

Cheers

Actually i'm not at all upset seeing melbourne suceeding. What are you talking about? Good for them.

But as i've said before, melbourne seems to have MORE than its fair share of people telling the rest of OZ it is as good as or better than any other city (normally sydney). No - most Melburnians are NOT like this. :) But the few that are, are soooooooooooooooo annoying. Get over it - yes you have a great city - really. Very "liveable" lol - now lets all get over it.

Anyway, i thought Queenslanders hated Melbourne more - us Sydneysiders don't care. :D

WE LOVE YOU MELBOURNE!!!! - it's OK, really. :D

Yeah melbourne are a pretty proud bunch...... but honestly most melbournians i mix with aren't parochial...just proud. but yes some of them are melbourne centric and that gets pretty annoying listening to it all the time. But all in all......all the people i know in melb love sydney and QLD. Sydney is an awsome city, in a class of its own and who can't love QLD tropical culture. Don't know why qlder's hate melbourne so much. If it is because of the melb centric chest thumping, well qlder's are just as guilty! Me personally, I consider sydney my 2nd home... (yes i have lived there, Sans Souci, erskineville and Elizabeth bay)

No you got us all wrong, Us Queenslanders are generally a friendly bunch. We just hate cities that consistantly say that "they don't care" about things when things become too much and then go on to consistently remind everyone that their city doesn't care just to make sure we all understand that your city doesn't care yet are always lurking in the background to see if anyone is hurting that cities feelings just in case. But its alright cause' "our city doesn't care".

Maybe - just maybe - there are people out there who actually don't care about city vs. city pissing contests. Your post suggests you however do care. :D

Anyway, the :D should signal that you shouldn't be getting to uptight about the post. Ie, i didn't use a :bash: So sensitive. ;)

Seriously though. I love Melbourne and Sydney. If I didn't enjoy it so much up here and had nothing to keep me here than I would without a doubt move to Melbourne straight away. It is the closest thing we've got to Europe and its only a 2 hour flight away.

Im planning to move there actually.
oh...and we're going there for a quick holiday in March. (just so happen to have U2 tickets too - and for the next week's Sydney concert).

LOL great thread. WA and queensland are the work horses and the SE are lazy consumers. It's the Truth in relative terms.

Also zach's correct (amazing) it's just another melbourbe ego thread.
