Nail. Head. fountainhead!

You really cant make a full judgement until QV1, the tallest on the block, is at least structurally complete :guns1:
Yeah, and the judgement is it is totally crap, at least from Chrisaus's pic:D

As for the other QV1, I just have high expectations from what had better be a damn good groundbreaking tower goddamnit...that's all;)

:guns1:

There's bound to be a west end block that's almost capable of being another QV, just walking around it now, this extremely large intense group of tightly packed max 10 level buildings is just freaking great even though the majority of all the facades are no where near complete!

Perhaps The Age or old Power Station or BOTH could get this type of über-urban redevelopment,

from the streets this "thing" is looking completely freaking mad!

EXACTLY the same level of anticipation with Fed Square, just dying to see the insides!

God I hate fed square. I refuse to go inside it. It's now a permanant scar on melbourne's CBD.
The best bits are the inside, man!!!

Just to further my comment on that..

The inside of the NGV Art Gallery @ Fed Square is *the best* museum space in terms of design I have seen anywhere in the world - and trust me I've been to a few musuems in some major cities abroad (The Met & Guggenheim in NYC, Art Institute in Chicago, Louvre in Paris to name a few)

Truly a work of art that museum itself .. outdo's the actual exhibits!

I agree, it's better than the Louvre in Paris and the National Gallery or the Tate Modern in London.

I agree, the interior is definately better than the exterior. There are some truly amazing space in there:D There are a few issue I have with the building(s)...the atrium is kind of lacking in function and focus, and maybe would have been better as the original "wintergarden", and the parts of the facade where they missed-out panels just looks a bit unfinished and too much like an afterthought. Overall however, the thing I REALLY like about Fed Square is that it actually got built. No matter what, people have an opinion about it, along with the exposure it has recieved overseas and the extra publicity it has given Melbourne!!

Funny thing...I also think the Melb. Musuem is also far superior on the inside. And the opening of the (other) NGV in a few months will also hopefully be another great museum interior (in addition to the great existing exterior!).

Back on the subject....I really like the idea of a QV type development on that west side of town....even with the docklands fully developed, a mixed use village is desperately needed over that way!

Yeah I agree the new Melbourne Museum in Carlton is also an excellent space inside - some rooms in particular and with the indoor mini-ecosystem really tops it off..

But for a for a single concise musuem space where every part harmonises with every other you can't go past it..

Though I *cant wait* to also see the NGV on St.Kilda Rd when it re-opens - main room, waterwall and all..

Still would love to know when the 'Transport' restaurant/pub ala Blue Train is going to open there on the SouthWest corner... very much must have run into trouble methinks..

Also agree with Foutainhead and A-Brain on all the points made...

The building on Fed Square with the missed-out panels definitely looks unfinished and "messy". The atrium, I don't have a problem with, except that the night lighting for the whole complex is unimaginative, especially on the Flinders St facade and atrium (which only changes spotlit colours...how original). That the Forum is across the road in its pathetic state is a sorry state of affairs.

How long have you been back in Melb, Foutainhead? I thought you were over in London? Let's admit it - for a city it's size and located in this part of the world, Melb matches it with the best and the biggest cities for institutional structures...NGVI is going to be awesome, whilst NGVA, the Ian Potter at Uni of Melb and Melb Museum (DCM magic!) ARE awesome.

Melb Museum has to be deferential to the REB on the outside, hence its austere (but classy) exterior, but it's all DCM postmodernist magic on the inside!

Yeah, this is on topic:

WHAT THE HELL HAVE THEY DONE?

BHP looks a hell of a lot more "blue" now - and yes it was a grey-ish day today, but the facade is looking lighter!

looks...............better!

btw, it's also filled a fair chunk of the gap when viewing from The Shrine

They are cleaning all the glass and are removing some of the plastic covering the sheets of steel on the facade. Streetscape works are underway along Russell Street and the glass "verandah" along Lonsdale Street is almost complete ready for the big move next week!!!
