How do you even respond to EAST COAST attitudes like this?

From New York's craiglist (where else but NY?) It's just got me depressed...

I've lived in LA for three years too long (leaving soon). You're right - IT BLOWS.

Everything you said is true, but you forgot to mention that LA's absolutely overrun with third-world refugees, mostly illegal, especially Mexicans whose ever-expanding neighborhoods are characterized by endless parades of fatties pushing baby strollers with a few more bambinos in tow, streets thickly littered with fast-food refuse, 99-cent stores, taggers' "art" on every wall, ballcap wearing dirtbags creeping around like cockroaches, lame mariachi music, and ugly brown hookers taking a night off from the kiddies.

On top of that LA white women are the worst I've run into anywhere in the world. They're either ultra-materialistic bitches with fake tits or paranoid freak jobs.

The weather's pretty nice but it's no longer enough reason to stay here......

It is always amusing to find some LA zombie writing about New York on this board. LA, of course, is the world capital of SMOG, strip malls, gang wars, McDonalds culture, traffic jams, pretense, motel whorehouses, mediocre food, and endless BOREDOM. When I heard that N.Korea was trying to develop nukes to reach the West Coast - I immediately thought there might be an upside to it.

This jerk is describing the Bronx, just trade Mexicans for 'Ricans. But you'll never catch this white xenophobe heading north on the D, now would you? They don't like this attitude in NYC either, in fact from natives of the city I've never heard one bad thing about LA, except for having to drive, which many don't know how. Ironically before coming here, everyone I spoke to was all too happy that I was going to California, they wanted to come as well. You only hear this type of shit from transplants who can't make it on either coast and end up resentfully heading back to Florida to live out their days in the equivalent of a mc mansion in LA, the double wide.

Well it's just that all-encompassing, snap-judgment of ...*contempt* that some, like even NY-Girl on here, admit to having for LA that's gotten me down, after being reminded by it by those posts. That undying assumption that after NYC, the "worthy" cities, due to man-made beauty and natural beauty, are, respectively, Chicago and San Francisco...with San Fran being heralded as "everything pure or pristine that California has to offer: relatively better-than-east-coast weather, cosmopolitan diversity, futurism & progressivism freedom (all of California's 'forward-looking' promise, in other words) + all the old-world style, east-coast-favored 'urbanity' due to a plethora of many tall buildings, density and mass transit"...t's hard not to remember what, exactly, are the unique or dominant _positives_ we are offering.

I read posts such as these, go out and gape at one or two of the ugly stripmalls near where I live (albeit, ones that have more international dining options than entire enclaves in Chicago or San Francisco)...and feel down.

It also makes me hate the contemptuous citizens of those other cities even more, and like klamedia said, the skin does get thicker, as does our determination... I think deep down we're still an ARROGANT city, and our smugness has probably had as much to do with the present aesthetically and civicaslly ugly conditions as anything else. All that self-deprecation is just an illusory veneer we spout to regurgitate the pre-dominant view held by the media since the riots (it just isnt "COOL" to like/love LA)....and now we really should start to look at ourselves more critically, and try to improve goddmanit.

Probably he was shocked that he ended up in the same neighborhood he was trying to get out of in New York. Ha! We cannot be too onion-skinned about comments like these. I myself have grown too tired of responding to such foolishness. East Coast people were raised to hate the West Coast and that will never change. Let them do that while we bask in the sunshine and count our blessings even more!

Vangelist,

I'm shocked to see one the more eloquent, staunch supporters of the LA forum like yourself, so easily succumb to such baloney posted on craiglist...I think you are overanalyzing things my friend, and lending too much credence to a post wrought with fallacious, inaccurate, sterotypical bullshiet... and you know what's even worst? The guy is obviously a xenophobe and doesn't deserve any credibilty in my book.

Vangelist a few things to help you remember where you live:

1)Go hike in Griffith Park up by the Observatory and view the city!!
2)Take a walking tour through Hollywood(since you live there) and marvel at all of the beautiful and unique apt buildings and the ever present Hollywood sign and reflect on why even gay pygmies in the bush in the Congo can rattle off verbatum some of Bette Davis' best lines.
3)Ride a train any train (well preferrably the Gold Line) and marvel at the vast metro area that surrounds LA and how that it is a star in its own right. Who hasn't heard of Pasadena, Santa Monica or Malibu?(Although you can only get to one by rail, damn!)
4)Run do not walk to Venice Beach on Sunday and experience what the vision of 'living la vida California' is best pictured as. Rent a bike or roller blades or even better yet get 2 other friends together and act like you 3 are Jack, Chrissie and Janet from 3's Company! Also take part in the drum circle at the close of the evening. You'll feel as though you've taken 'shrooms even if you haven't.
I know, LA is stubborn, it wants to take its time to do the things it knows it should be doing and it's just way too arrogant to just start copying other cities that have done what it should be doing successfully already. It doesn't want to be a European styled city nor an East coast city. It doesn't want to be a city of reflection or of invention. It just wants to be LA. And the more you push it the more it rebels. What a bitch! Instead of being just a cog in the city, this city let's you assume that you are part of an ongoing creative process. We are part of an important time in this city. Perhaps this board will be revered someday and turned into a movie and then we could all be turned into superheroes by our screen names! Of course I would be "klamedia" and my powers would be that I could infect just by shaking hands or at least rubbing coochies. I'd love to see "aquamadoor" "futuretrance" of course our very own "godblessbotox" brought to life!! All in all, it's both a magical place and a hellhole. It aint cute like SF, sturdy like Chicago or forthright like New York, it's LA baby. The city of living, broken and yet to be realized dreams. Now go find a cop car chase on tv and remember how lucky you are to live here!

As a Puerto Rican from the Bronx, I am deeply offended at your level of maturity.

"Muaaaaaaaaaah mommy this guy was an asshole so I am going to hit some other kid to retaliate."

:bash:

Hm... sounds like a place I'm very familiar with... but I've never been to LA, so it can't be that... hm...

Shit, must apply to good old New York City. Whaddayaknow.

Hold your head up, Los Angeles is a great city. What difference does it make if someone who supposedly doesn't give a rat's ass about Los Angeles, no longer resides there? There are millions more who make Los Angeles such a dynamic place to live. Anyways, the author of this craigslist post will probably be obsessed with trying to take Los Angeles down one person at a time, never realizing how insecure they sound while trying. They can leave Los Angeles, but they can't take your Los Angeles away from you.
