They should have adopted the greenfield idea and build it in phases as demand improves. That strategy would be similar to what they are saying about expanding every five years, which we all know they won't do. Adopting the greenfield idea would ensure that at the end of the phased expansion periods we would have a nice, large and modern airport. There's quite a bit of dumbness in the decision they made. In fact, I think they didn't have a good reason.

The government was just dumb in cancelling the greenfield terminal. In favor for a 2nd runway which i think that tender has some very strong stank.

If i was the government i would have gotten a new deal with China to have both the 2nd runway and the first half of the greenfield terminal built together in the same tender.

Just like on the SGR the stations were not tendered separately and built separately they were built all together.

This is what I think they should go with; now that greenfield has been cancelled.

I sincerely apologize for the lack of quality and orientation of some aspects of the image, but I used paint for goodness sake! Haha I made it in a hurry, but seems like a good way to move forward.

Interesting concept @Singh555, and if that was doable it would add 35 additional gates to the airport...

I think abandoning the greenfield expansion plans is universally criticized on this forum. Building a second runway is not mutually exclusive to expanding or building a new terminal i.e. they can and should be carried out together.

I think the earlier reports of people in the opposition having a stake in the original Greenfield is looking to be more and more true. Don't want to feed the team that is facing you in the election with new capital.....

PS Irungu recently said there are radical changes in the works for the airport. With greenfield terminal seemingly totally abandoned, all we can do is wait for the new proposals rather than waste our time and efforts bemoaning the losses. One of the Uhuruto govt. greatest successes is in the expansion of infrastructure. I'm positive any new designs in the works will be released/announced before the elections occur.

2nd Runway

Personally i think GOK decision to cancel the greenfields terminal im favour of a 2nd Runway is brilliant idea and well informed. In any modern airports like Or Tambo 2nd runways is key to Cat A status for direct Long range flights.Incase of runway closure you dont want Your hub closed or diverted to another country like it happened earlier this year diverts to Uganda and Darsalaam.
It guarantee seamless operations regardless of any obstructions or maintenance on Runways. This is primary requisite for creating a reliable Hub for inbound and outbound international airtraffic.
Therefore its essential and is a matter of priority. The terminals can be upgraded and added in stages just like LRH, CDG or Newark NYC,did in early stages. But runways are a backbone of any aviation hub.

Is the second runway under construction?

Once again, building runways and expansion of the terminals are not mutually exclusive. With proper planning and financing, both projects can happen concurrently :eek:hno:

It's like building train tracks with no stations just to save money...

When we know they can be built at the same time...

He issue is prudent resource management. He estimated cost of greenfield was to hit 100B according to the ministry.

After the construction of new terminals after the fire, additional capacity was realised and it's now 14 M which is the capacity that is projected for 2025. Currently the airport is not operating to full capacity but around 6.5M.

So they argue that instead of spending the 100B now, why not invest it another projects which are urgent and a priority.

Let them refurbish the current terminals ones first to maximise their potential. Why build a whole new one yet the current ones looks like something from the archives..... even after building just 1/2 of the X, they would still need to build a new road infrastructure and new security gates on the side of utawala then joining Eastern bypass according to the ESIA document as the greenfield was on the furthest north east section of JKIA land. They would also need to a new road to link 2 terminals, new taxi ways etc. Still expensive even if its 1/2 X. Refurbish the existing one first to maximise its potential. And probably then we can build the half X later on before continuing to complete the full X.
