I have been following the progress of the metro in Birmingham and have often speculated what the plans were for the very run down buildings in Bull Street and Albert road, now the Eastern extension metro stop and the HS2 station is to be built in the area. I´m sure it has been mentioned in the Birmingham thread but I haven´n been able to find it.
Googled forward to the Martineau Galleries project and found these plans. I then made this double picture of more or less the same area and . Looks very promising and a great example of densifying the area along the metro.

The front of the Steamhouse on Digbeth High Street is going to be lopped off to accommodate the Metro Extension
i was about to get up in arms but its not a particularly beautiful building so, whatever.

it looks like this, btw; the left side is along meriden street, which is i assume the side that'll be taken off and this whole slanted-roof jobby is going according to a diagram Stel sent below.

No it’s no oil painting. One of the many former car dealerships on the High Street.

The plans are a little confusing, but it looks like the whole front will be demolished.

oh! its a much larger building than i thought it was, ill edit my message to be correct :)

edit: i assume this is so that the tram doesnt have to do this squiggly maneuver (technical language) to get on to the high street, and can instead do something similar to the blue line?

A little less acute, but it’s difficult to demolish just a small section of a building and keep its structural integrity.

From what I can tell this is just used for typical classrooms/offices, would it not be hugely worth knocking this down and rebuilding bigger/nicer or even straight moving the classrooms elsewhere and selling up? What's the point in just making good the existing building?

Always thought the colleges here were a huge waste of land tbh. They could all be knocked into one taller building.

A few photos from Bull Street, a great deal of concrete has been poured from one side of the street to the other for the track slab where the 4 tram tracks enter and merge into 2, the old subway is almost filled in up to street level, work continues with utilities with a new water main and its branches being installed on the eastern side of the street.

Less spotted tram there in the background

Will the shops on the upper ramp be reconfigured to front street level?

Or are we expecting the entire thing to be bulldozed anytime soon, therefore waste of time?

The square's going, that'll be Martineau galleries. Martineau place should/will be refurbed. I'd like to to see it brought back something likes its original state before the late 90's throw up all over it.
That and the public realm improvements should help with this end of town. I think the post war stuff here could look quite nice with a bit of TLC
