There is also the possibility that it is out of proportion because it looks stunted. This happens all over the city because of the height police. Many buildings end up looking stubby.
In my view, the main thing is for the building to be well designed, likely to last and be pleasing to the eye. Although obviously what pleases one person doesn't always please the other. I have started to move away from the view that we need taller and taller buildings as they can have some downsides (shade being one of them). If we have to have them, I would much prefer to have a cluster rather than tall buildings dotted around. Getting the train into Manchester and the new skyscraper buildings around the place didn't really sway me. Some are fine buildings on their own but overall I wasn't too impressed.

This isn't a rant abut Manchester as I worked in the place for a few years, met some great people and I think the city has made some really positive moves forward.

Well, if you haven't an eye for proportion, making it taller will simply result in a bigger ill-proportioned building.

In my personal opinion, there is only one new building I'd call well proportioned, and that's the black matchbox down on the Strand. I think it's currently occupied by the Mersey Tunnel people. Simple, unfussy and the dimensions are pleasing. Most of the rest is undistinguished, to put it mildly.

Sorry to bump this thread but I noticed several of the units for sale yesterday on Rightmove.
They are large units with plenty of glass, excellent views and large terraces.
But, are they in fact finished?
Anyone been passed recently?
Around the base of the building is an unfinished mess. The large ground floor unit to the rear is incomplete and the landscaping is non existent. It looks like a builders yard and has done for a couple of years. No sign of any site activity for a long time. Some of the cladding has come off as have some other bits of 'trim'. You'd be mad to buy into this development. Such a shame, because superficially, and from a distance, it looks good, and it is well located.
