From Sodomy to Intimacy. painted in 2015
by John Walter (born 1978)
Acrylic paint on canvas
This painting was made by the artist as part of a larger
installation, titled Alien Sex Club. This multi-media artwork
included paintings, sculpture, video and sound to explore sex
and sexual health in the 2 |st century. Walter is particularly
concerned with increasing transmission rates of HIV and the
reasons for this. He uses his maximalist' practice, pop
culture and humour to broach this challenging subject in a
more accessible way
This painting's title addresses changing social attitudes
towards same-sex relationships between men in recent
times.
Purchased by the Walker Art Gallery with the assistance of Art Fund and gifs
from the artist in 2016.
