I lived in Coventry from 1977 to 1983 and the lack of a viable train service between there and Leicester was the reason we were forced to move. Initially I was working in Birmingham and my wife in Coventry. That was OK even when she moved on to a permanent job in Birmingham. The problems arose when she obtained a new job in Leicester in 1982. Back then there was no rail service between Coventry and Leicester except via Birmingham. There was no suitable express bus service either as the first bus left Coventry too late. Her efforts to get a driving licence failed and her only option apart from me driving her there was to get a bus to Hinkley and then get a train into Leicester. It was not a viable long-term option.

In the meantime I had been elected to the City Council for a three-year term in 1980 for Cheylesmore Ward. By 1982 I had been appointed deputy chair of transportation. I knew that I would lose by seat in the 1983 elections but had a fair chance of coming back in 1984, if not for Cheylesmore, in a different ward. We took the decision not to defend my seat and reluctantly to move to Leicester.
