A brownfield site in Bolton is being transformed into a mix of more than 200 homes, green spaces and shops.

Developer Step Places and social housing provider Bolton at Home, working with Bolton Council, are now on site to transform the 4.5 acres plot.

The Moor Lane scheme in Cheadle Square will develop a mixture of apartments and townhouses in Bolton town centre.

Orbit Developments, through its investment business North West Portfolio, has acquired Central Retail Park in Bolton.

The scheme extends to 86,521 sq ft across seven units anchored by retailers B&M, Iceland and Pets at Home and has 305 free on-site car parking spaces.

A public consultation has been launched into detailed plans for family homes and community green space in Horwich.

The development is proposed at land off Victoria Road, part of Horwich Golf Club.

So good to see investment flooding into the GM towns now. Was always a thorn in our side that the city centre (an economic powerhouse) was surrounded by less economically successful towns.

GM is a big place, with a lot of big towns with large populations. If we can them all thriving and connected with a decent public transport network, we’ll be fairly unstoppable in my opinion.

These towns have so much character and potential - especially Stockport and Bolton IMO. Much nicer than somewhere tacky like the Trafford Centre.

Also I think places like Rochdale have a lot of potential to become bigger versions of Hebden Bridge/Todmorden. Perfect balance between rural access and city - you can be at Victoria in 15 minutes.

Plans have been unveiled for a £10m 58-home housing development on a former Bolton car park.

The town centre scheme will be delivered by Birchwood-based Your Housing Group, with local firm Forshaw Construction appointed as contractor.

The St George’s Row development will provide 58 affordable homes, including a mix of two-, three- and four-bed houses available for shared ownership and rent to buy.

Sorry to digress but I have this notion that Bolton town centre is a classic example of how Big Money overtakes common sense urban planning.

The general impression I have is this hugely well connected train station, the 'tidy' new college, the beautiful Town Hall and civic buildings and the Octagon. But on the other hand, there is Bradshawgate as an echo of its glory, the lost opportunity that is Newport Street.

however the biggest blunder is how much of the town centre is given over for retail park car parking. An in and out culture that barely benefits the town centre to be anything.

Those shops are needed. But you can easily argue that the space taken by them in central Bolton should have been for top quality housing, for people working in Bolton or commuting to Manchester or Preston.

No no and no. You can polish a .........

Bolton council have probably been GM’s dumbest over the last few decades. From building massive out of town retail parks, moving the football stadium to Horwich, to building houses on every disused railway alignment into the town, meaning Metrolink will likely never reach it.

Yet they still wonder why the town centre has declined.

Lots of potential - but the council needs to admit its massive failures

Yes fella. Dumb is the word. I have been doing some supportive work in Bolton and when I commute by train, this transport hub linked to the main line opens up to vast stretches of car parking and various metal sheds that could be anywhere than the centre of a large town.

Bolton would be a great "project" but I suspect its politics are too weak and enamoured to big business and are divided around ethnicity and snobbery to see a unified approach that would enhance the town. Nevertheless the town has some very good schools, lots of attractive suburbs, countryside and is well linked (bar the tram)

Houses going up all over Horwich, on open land, playing fields and a golf course, very popular for commuters with two rail stations with insufficient car parking and the M61 on the doorstep.
Sadly infrastructure hasn't caught up, Horwich was gridlocked yesterday because of problems on the M61 and local roadworks, Chorley Old rd is a nightmare and will only get worse where are the schools doctors and dentists for the new arrivals?
Bolton council replaced the old leisure centre with a new smaller unit with fewer facilities and an unfinished car park no forward planning, all Bolton council are interested in is the tax from from the residents and Middlebrook and just throw Horwich a few scraps.
